British & EU negotiators to begin three days of Brexit talks

Dominic Raab wearing a suit and tie LONDON ENGLAND- SEPTEMBER 01 Britain's Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab arrives to attend a Cabinet meeting of senior government ministers at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office

Meanwhile, Catherine Barnard, professor of European Union Law at the University of Cambridge, told CGTN that she believes the United Kingdom is engaged in a deliberate, high-risk strategy with the EU.

"Time is not on our side and frankly, I am deeply anxious considering the lack of progress in the negotiations at this late stage".

Her intervention came in the House of Commons on Tuesday afternoon, where the minister for Northern Ireland admitted that a planned new bill "does break worldwide law".

"This seriously undermines our authority on the global stage".

The comment came one day after the government was forced to play down reports in the British media that it was seeking to alter elements of the Northern Ireland Protocol, part of the deal that Johnson's government reached with Brussels a year ago, created to keep an open border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. "We will always reserve the right to act in the best interests of Northern Ireland and the U.K.'s internal market", she said.

If the sticking level of fisheries and state support can't be resolved and a deal agreed, Britain would have a buying and selling relationship with the bloc like Australia's, which might be "an excellent end result", Johnson stated. Does he recognise that adherence to the rule of law is not negotiable?

He asked Mr Lewis: "Will he assure us that nothing proposed in this legislation does or potentially might breach worldwide obligations or global legal arrangements?"

In response, Mr Lewis said: "I would say to (Sir Bob Neill) that yes this does break worldwide law in a very specific and limited way".

Lewis said the taking the power to disapply the European Union law concept of "direct effect" required in certain tightly defined circumstances.

In response to the report, Downing Street said only that it was still "working hard to resolve outstanding issues with the Northern Ireland Protocol" but was considering "fall-back options".

Local health officials recommend getting flu shot ahead of flu season
During the 2018-2019 flu season the vaccine coverage in Canada was rated at 70 per cent for seniors . But no patients were diagnosed with both influenza and COVID-19, Song and co-authors reported.

As political leaders representing the majority of citizens who voted to reject Brexit, we have strongly represented the case that our peace, stability and economy can not be jeopardised and, in particular, that any harm caused to the Good Friday Agreement, in all of its parts, would be profoundly reckless.

Sir Jonathan, who is a QC, was knighted in December 2019 for his legal services to the government.

Johnson's spokesman James Slack declined to comment on the reasons for his departure.

Shadow Northern Ireland secretary Louise Haigh said: "It beggars belief that the Government is - yet again - playing a risky game in Northern Ireland and sacrificing our global standing at the altar of the Prime Minister's incompetence".

Johnson has said Britain could walk away from the talks within weeks and insists that a no-deal exit would be a "good outcome for the UK".

In the Commons, former prime minister Theresa May warned the government was in danger of losing the trust of other countries that it would honour its global agreements while Labour described the admission as "absolutely astonishing".

In the Commons, during a Urgent Question debate on the Northern Ireland protocol, Ms May criticised the move.

"If the UK Government decides to amend the Withdrawal Agreement legislation that it passed previous year with great fanfare in the House of Commons and was endorsed with great fanfare in the European Parliament by members of the Brexit Party and others, it would seem to indicate that they either were unaware of what they were voting on previously or they don't have word and honour in terms of standing by agreements they have made", he said.

The Government's critics have accused it of bad faith after it was reported that it would seek to use Westminster legislation to changes aspects of the protocol related to state aid and customs administration.
