McConnell says Senate will vote on slimmed-down coronavirus relief bill Thursday

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi

In a statement on Tuesday morning, McConnell described the "new targeted proposal" as "focused on some of the very most urgent healthcare, education, and economic issues".

After enormous blowback from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), other leading Democrats on the Hill have joined in excoriating McConnell for prioritizing a dirty, dying industry over the well-being of struggling Americans.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told reporters he didn't know if there would be a relief bill this year, when asked about the prospects of a deal on Wednesday morning.

The Republican-supported plan won't likely get the 60 votes it needs to pass the Senate - or receive support in the Democratic-majority House if it gets that far, CNBC reported.

"They (Democrats) do not want any bipartisan relief whatsoever to reach American families prior to the election" on November 3, McConnell said.

McConnell's proposal includes $257 billion for a second round of Paycheck Protection Program assistance, $105 billion for schools, $16 billion for coronavirus testing, $31 billion for a coronavirus vaccine, $15 billion for childcare centers and more. "Yet Republicans believe the many serious differences between our two parties should not stand in the way of agreeing where we can agree and making law that helps our nation".

Congress established a benefit providing an additional $600 per week as part of the CARES Act which passed in March, but that provision expired at the end of July.

After the White House offered a $1.3 trillion bill in late August, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat from California, turned it down, saying it wouldn't be enough to help Americans during the pandemic.

Ellen DeGeneres claims to speak about bullying allegations when chat show yields
A statement issued by Ellen DeGeneres' representative confirming the same was obtained by a news portal on Tuesday (local time). Three producers, Ed Glavin, Kevin Leman and Jonathan Norman, were let go from the show after the WarnerMedia investigation.

The GOP proposal does not include another round of direct stimulus payments to Americans.

The House of Representatives passed the Heroes Act, a $3 trillion coronavirus relief bill, in May, but it was never voted on in the Senate.

"Senate Republicans appear dead-set on another bill which doesn't come close to addressing the problems and is headed nowhere".

"Democratic leaders know this simple choice will put the spotlight on their partisan antics", the Kentucky Republican said.

"There's a good chance they feel the pressure once they see the Democrats are not going to fold to this emaciated bill, which leaves so much out". Negotiations for coronavirus relief legislation over the summer was primarily conducted by White House officials and Pelosi and Schumer.

Sen. Cory Gardner of Colorado, who is a vulnerable Republican this election, announced Tuesday in a press release that he will support McConnell's measure.

"If we can afford to give a $1 trillion tax break to the top 1% and large corporations and $740 billion to the Pentagon, please don't tell me we cannot afford to provide $2,000 a month to the working class, $600 a week to unemployed workers and expand Medicare to all", Sanders wrote on Twitter.
