China may let TikTok face United States ban: Here's why

Trump says he won't extend deadline for US TikTok sale

President Donald Trump said he would not extend a deadline for the sale of the US operations of TikTok to an American company.

TikTok's owners are now being forced to sell their overseas operations by the US Government, who cite security concerns. He maintained there will be "no extension of the TikTok deadline".

President Donald Trump only agreed to allow Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) to negotiate the acquisition of popular short-video app TikTok if it could secure a deal in 45 days. A week later, he issued another order and gave the company the 90-day ultimatum to close the deal. It is even stated that the Chinese administration preferred to close the application in the United States of America rather than selling TikTok's U.S. operations. Three people with direct knowledge of the subject in Beijing have said that the Chinese government would rather the app be closed in the USA than forcibly auctioned off to another owner. Talks with American firms interested in the buy-out, including Microsoft and Oracle, have run into complications, according to Bloomberg, while regulatory hurdles in China also risk drawing out the process, as ByteDance is required to submit any proposed deal for official approval. According to the reports, officials were reportedly pondering the decision to extend the deadline for an acquisition past September 15.

China's State Council Information Office and its foreign and commerce ministries did not immediately respond to requests for comment sent after working hours.

As one of the most valuable start-up companies in the world, ByteDance is striving to deepen its social media services in other Asian markets. TikTok has insisted it has never provided user data to China and that it would not do so if asked.

It's not just Republicans who are taking a stance against TikTok.

The discussions have risen in prominence since the Chinese government took steps recently to make the sale of TikTok to a USA tech giant such as Microsoft more hard. If TikTok is acquired by a U.S firm before the deadline, it could lift the president's USA ban on the app.

India was the first country to ban TikTok and more than 100 other Chinese mobile applications because of security reasons. She said the company was exploring multiple paths forward, declining to provide more specificity.
