Netflix defends Cuties film amid accusations of ‘child sexualisation’

GOP Lawmakers Call on DOJ to Act on Netflix's 'Cuties'

The French film "Cuties" is drawing strong opposition from a growing number of Capitol Hill lawmakers who are demanding investigations into Netflix.

The "Cuties" movie revolves around underage girls who join a "free-spirited" dance group, with the main heroine standing against her overly conservative family.

The poster, which showed four young girls in provocative attire, was pulled and replaced with a different image, with Netflix issuing an apology, but the controversy surrounding the film has only grown more intense after its September 9 release.

Amid the criticism, the Paris-born "Cuties" director, Maïmouna Doucouré, revealed to the media that she has received death threats, even though she has previously stated that the film is pointedly against the hypersexualization of children. The poster incited widespread backlash, with Netflix being accused of "sexualising" young girls.

In a segment during the film on Netflix, Doucouré says that in performing research for the film - her feature directorial debut - she met with hundreds of pre-teens to understand how they perceived their femininity in today's society. "It was not OK, nor was it representative of this French film which won an award at Sundance".

Tthe film faced controversy when Netflix released a promotional photo that featured young girls in provocative dance poses in August. A change.org petition was started, encouraging users to cancel their Netflix subscription in protest of the film.

"Netflix is airing a film called Cuties depicting children being coached to engage in simulated sexual acts, for cameras both onscreen and off", said Hawley, a Missouri Republican.

Netflix has since released a statement, defending the film.

"Finally, the Department of Justice should also investigate those involved in the film's casting and production to ensure these children were not exploited behind the scenes", Buck and Biggs added. AdvertisementOn Friday, Sen. Josh Hawley sent a letter to Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, demanding that the film be removed from the streaming platform.
