Trump, Biden focus their campaigns on U.S. West wildfires

Oregon wildfires: Apocalyptic cloud of smoke covers US west coast – 40,000 people evacuate

Woodward had 18 interviews with Trump for the book.

In a column on Monday, economist and former labor secretary described Robert Reich described Trump as the most anti-environmental president in the nation's history-an objectively high bar.

An analysis out in August from Stanford climate and wildfire researcher Michael Goss and others found that a almost 2-degree (1 Celsius) rise in autumn temperatures and 30 per cent drop in rainfall has more than doubled the number of autumn days with extreme fire weather over the past 40 years. Woodward assured him that he did.

The devastation prompted a visit from President Trump, who was scheduled to arrive in McClellan Park in Sacramento County on Monday morning for a briefing on the wildfires.

Mr. Biden, the 2020 Democratic presidential nominee, said the threat of climate change "requires action, not scapegoating" and a president to "defend us from every attack seen and unseen - always without exception".

Both Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti have attributed the intensity of this season's fires to climate change, pushing back on President Donald Trump's assertion that the fires were due to poor land management.

Trump and Newsom are participating in a briefing Monday on the deadly fires that have forced thousands of residents out of their homes along the West Coast.

Biden, in an outdoor speech near his home in Wilmington, decried Trump's refusal to acknowledge the scientific underpinning of the climate crisis as "unconscionable" and said the US leader had failed to protect the country from the "ravages of climate change".

"I wish science agreed with you", Crowfoot said. Another official echoed Newsom to which Trump responded, "It will start getting cooler". And then Trump added, "I don't think science knows, actually"-before quickly moving onto another person in the meeting".

Wildfires have killed at least 35 people, caused massive damage and enveloped many parts of the U.S. west coast in smoke in recent weeks. He will also recognize the work of the California National Guard, which has airlifted scores of stranded people to safety over the past week.

"Because if we ignore that science and kind of put our head in the sand and say that it's all about vegetation management, we're not going to succeed together protecting Californians".

United Kingdom agrees trade deal with Japan as row with European Union intensifies
And economists caution that deals like that with Japan could never compensate for any failure to reach agreement with the EU. The legislation would override part of the Brexit withdrawal agreement between the United Kingdom and the EU.

"It was worse than the Camp Fire, which I didn't think was possible".

The President said countries in Europe don't have the same issues with wildfires because they manage their forests.

Wildfires across Oregon, California and Washington state have destroyed thousands of homes and a half-dozen small towns since August, scorching more than 1.6 million ha and killing 35 people in the three states.

"Donald Trump's climate denial may not have caused these fires, and record floods, and record hurricanes, but if he gets a second term these hellish events will become more common, more devastating, and more deadly", Mr. Biden said in Wilmington, Del.

She said the fires were a wake-up call to the seriousness of climate change.

Over the weekend, Biden said the West Coast wildfires may be the start of an "unending barrage of tragedies" if countries across the globe do not curb climate-warming emissions.

Kamala Harris, the Democratic vice-presidential candidate who tweeted that Trump "denied evidence" the flames were "intensified by the climate crisis", is also set to tour the damage, as the infernos ignite a political conflagration. He pointed not just to wildfires in the West and hurricanes along the Gulf Coast, but also to droughts affecting farmers in the Midwest and even climate-related threats to USA military installations around the world.

Meanwhile, Biden is remaining in his home state of DE, as he has for much of the campaign, to avoid large crowds and prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

"This is truly the bellwether for climate change on the West Coast". That's because it's not a partisan phenomenon.

Trump has pulled the USA out of the 2015 Paris Agreement that laid out an worldwide approach to climate change, while Biden says climate change is on his list of major crises facing the United States and has promised to return to the Paris accord.
