US Border Patrol seized OnePlus Buds as 'counterfeit Apple AirPods'

CBP Seizes 2,000 OnePlus Buds, Calls Them

The earbuds featured a design similar to the first-gen Apple AirPods, with half in-ear style earbuds and an oval case.

According to the CBP press release, which makes no mention of the OnePlus branding, the units originated from Hong Kong and were headed to Nevada, but were seized at JFK on August 31.

Thousands of "counterfeit Apple AirPod earbuds" seized entering the U.S. by customs officials appear to be genuine wireless earphones made by OnePlus.

COVID-19 May Last Till End Of 2021: Anthony Fauci
As of September 11, there are 6.42 million cases of COVID-19 in the United States, with about 192,000 reported deaths. More than 9 lakh people across the world have died due to the disease so far.

Based on the accompanying photos, however, the seized products are actually legitimate OnePlus Buds, as clearly described on the earphones' boxing.

"The interception of these counterfeit earbuds is a direct reflection of the vigilance and commitment to mission success by our CBP Officers daily", Troy Miller, Director of CBP's New York Field Operations, said in a statement on the case. However, since they are priced at $79, the actual retail value of the shipment is $158,000; so instead of stopping counterfeit goods for almost $400,000, the CBP officers actually prevented 2,000 legitimate sales from occurring.

As of now, it isn't clear if all of the 2,000 seized units were OnePlus Buds, though the images shared by the CBP clearly suggest that at least a few of them were. The company was so proud, that it issued a press release on Friday, and today made everything public with a post on Twitter. I'm not sure why everyone is Tweeting this news this weekend, but I've got to assume that OnePlus has already dealt with this and taken back their product?
