Who Wants To Be A Millionaire: Teacher beats brother to win jackpot

A teacher whose brother previously won the £500,000 prize has gone one better to win the jackpot on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

In what was a pretty astonishing game where the lucky victor only had to use one of his lifelines, host Jeremy Clarkson revealed to viewers that Donald wasn't the only member of the Fear family to sit in the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? chair.

Brother Davyth, who teaches geography, appeared on the show in September a year ago. Sounds like brains certainly run in that family!

He said: 'The first thing I spotted as the question flashed up on my screen is the date, and I knew it would be Blackbeard and I had Blackbeard in my head before I read the question, and then it was Blackbeard'.

Earlier in the show, Clarkson joked that sitting beside Fear was like "sitting next to the internet in a pink shirt".

Donald said his brother was his "hero and best friend".

For the £1m cheque on Friday, host Jeremy Clarkson asked, "In 1718, which pirate died in battle off the coast of what is now North Carolina?".

Speaking to Holly and Phil on This Morning about the momentous 20 minutes that changed his life (yes, he did it that quickly), he said: "I didn't phone anyone from the studio itself". He correctly answered 14 questions to do so. It was a simple question and most history teachers worth their salt would know the answer even though it is not part of the curriculum.

And that retirement is due to begin soon - since winning the jackpot, he has resigned from Haberdashers' Adams Grammar school in Newport, Shropshire.

Donald Fear said he wanted to give at least 70% of his winnings to his family and spend the rest on a "comfortable retirement".

Donald said following his million pound victory that he knew his brother would be delighted for him.

After his win, the father of four celebrated by going on a caravan holiday along the Northumberland coast with his wife of 33 years, nurse Debs.

"I had just given up, I was just saying to the staff "I am just too old and slow", "if I get in the chair, I will do a good job but I am not going to get in the chair", so in a way my mentality was fine because I had written it off, I wasn't full of tension", Mr Fear told ITV News.

'I don't know how you spend that much, ' he said.

"I will probably see another year or two out to see my last A-level class through but I think it's about time me and my wife start looking around the world".

Jeremy said: 'You've beaten your brother - how does that feel?'
