Louisville settles lawsuit over Breonna Taylor’s death

City of Louisville reaches agreement with Breonna Taylor's family

The family of Breonna Taylor, a black woman killed in a police shooting in her own home, have settled their civil case with the USA city of Louisville for substantial compensation and promises of reforms, media reported Tuesday.

A joint press conference with the Taylor family attorneys and Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer is expected to take place this morning (September 15), where the settlement will be officially revealed.

The settlement follows weeks of private talks between the two parties and will include a cash payout and broad police reforms, he said. Also, any officer that is involved in a shooting will need to undergo drug and alcohol testing.

Authorities in Louisville and the state of Kentucky pledged to implement measures that might head off incidents similar to the botched raid in which Taylor was killed.

"Today what we did here was to do what we could do to bring a little bit of police reform and it's just a start", continued Ms Baker.

Taylor, a licensed EMT, was shot at least eight times and died, according to the lawsuit filed by Palmer.

Last week, a grand jury was empaneled to investigate the fatal shooting.

Three plainclothes officers opened Taylor's front door and "blindly" opened fire into their apartment, according to a wrongful death lawsuit filed in April by Taylor's mother, Tamika Palmer.

Charges in the Breonna Taylor case? .

One of the officers, Brett Hankison, was sacked for "blindly" firing 10 shots into Taylor's apartment from outside.

Walker said he was "scared to death" so he grabbed his gun and when the door was knocked down, he fired a shot that ended up striking an officer in the leg. Sgt. John Mattingly and Detective Myles Cosgrove were placed on administrative leave. One officer, Brett Hankinson, was sacked in late June for "wantonly and blindly" firing into her apartment, but for many, the lack of consequences for those men from the police system only serves to reinforce the idea that cops will remain protected when they murder Black people. All three officers were named as defendants in the lawsuit. Several women alleged Mr Hankinson had sexually assaulted them, and he has been under investigation for excessive force.

The agreement signals an end to the civil proceedings but not to the criminal investigation, which has yet to lead to any charges, six months after Taylor's death.

City officials have denied that the shooting was the product of a push to gentrify.

Attorney Sam Aguilar has expressed frustration with the City's response to Breonna's case.

"LMPD has tried to sweep this under the rug", Aguiar said at the time.

Police descended on her apartmen after securing a court-approved warrant as part of a drug investigation involving her ex-boyfriend that allowed officers to enter her home without any warning.
