U.S. News has ranked colleges and universities each year since 1985, and Johns Hopkins has been among the top 16 for 26 consecutive years. It also has the 90th-best undergraduate engineering program in the country, tied with 11 other schools. McPherson College ranked 31st and Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina nabbed the No. 38 spot. "We do not conduct unscientific straw polls for use in our computations, and schools' ranks are not manipulated to coddle business relationships".

"This year's rankings offer heartening evidence of our academic strengths across the University", said Provost and Dean of Faculties David Quigley. 9 spot with Northwestern and Cal Tech in the National Universities category, a broad assessment of more than 400 US colleges and universities for 2021.

In the last year, St. Lawrence was also included in several of The Princeton Review's other popular publications, including Best Value Colleges, in which St. Lawrence's alumni network has been ranked among the best in the nation for the last several years, most recently earning the No. 4 spot.

The top schools in the overall ranking for 2020 include Princeton University at No. 1, Harvard University at No. 2, Columbia University at No. 3 and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Yale University both tied for fourth to round out the top five. Sterling College ranked No. 46 and Ottawa University and Tabor College in Hillsboro tied at 49th. MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe ranked 91st and Friends University in Wichita ranked No. 98. U.S. News gathers data from and about each school in up to 15 areas related to academic excellence.
