Toronto mosque 'deeply saddened' after man stabbed to death outside building

Mohamed-Aslim Zafis 58 was killed in a stabbing outside a mosque in Rexdale

Toronto Police have identified the victim of the city's latest homicide.

At the time of the 2018 charge, Tiberio Barcelos's address was listed at the same King George Road home in Weston Village where his parents, Joao Barcelos, 64, and Iva Barcelos, 59, were found by police Saturday afternoon with multiple stab wounds.

The incident happened in Toronto's Rexdale Boulevard and Bergamot Avenue, near Islington Avenue, at around 8:45pm local time, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) reported. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Homicide detectives say Mohamed-Aslim Zafis was sitting outside the International Muslim Organization of Toronto, controlling access to the building in compliance with public health measures meant to curb the spread of COVID-19, when the suspect approached him.

Insp. Hank Idsinga, head of the force's homicide unit, says both cases involve brown-skinned victims who died of stab wounds after sudden, vicious attacks that took place within kilometres of one another. Police said in a news release that he was not living at the King George home.

United States backs off Canadian aluminium tariffs
The government remains prepared to retaliate should the USA decide to act on its tariff threat, she added. The US first imposed tariffs on foreign steel and aluminium in 2018, citing national security concerns.

Idsinga says that while officers have not yet determined whether the same suspect is involved in both cases, investigators feel there are too many parallels to dismiss. "We've got to be cognizant of the possibility that they are connected".

Police are searching for a suspect described as a slim male wearing a black hoodie.

Authorities said the suspect, described with a slender build and was wearing a black hoodie and black pants, fled the area on foot.

Anyone with further information is asked to contact investigators at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
