17% of S. Koreans have confidence in Trump

31 2020 Brexit supporters hold British and US flags during a rally in London. The international reputation of the United States has declined further in the wake of its handling of the coronavirus pandemic

The worldwide reputation of the United States has fallen sharply, driven by poor views of how it handled the novel coronavirus pandemic, according to a survey published by the Washington-based Pew Research Center on Tuesday. Only 15% of the participating countries gave the US good marks for dealing with the pandemic.

In only one country surveyed - South Korea - did a majority of the public view the USA favourably.

The poll, conducted by the Pew Research Center between June 10 and August 3, shows a drastic drop in confidence in the us and its president across the 13 advanced economies where more than 13,000 adults were polled, with ratings for the U.S.in some of its ally countries reaching record lows and the proportion of people expressing confidence in Trump plummeting to dim digits.

For Trump's adversaries, these numbers prove how much damage he has done. Japan gave him the highest rating, with one-quarter of its respondents expressing confidence.

The majority of the public in every country surveyed did not have confidence in Mr Trump, with Belgians expressing the most scepticism - only nine percent said they had confidence in the United States president.

As for Trump himself, only 20 per cent of the poll's 1,037 Canadian respondents expressed confidence in the president, the lowest rating Pew has ever recorded in Canada and a precipitous drop from the 83 per cent support for Barack Obama they found in 2016.

Trump ranks last in trust when compared with the six world leaders in the survey.

People in Japan and South Korea have mixed views of the United States but generally negative views of President Donald Trump.

"And, in 11 of the 13 countries surveyed, half or more say the US has done a very bad job dealing with the coronavirus outbreak".

A median of 15 percent across the nations polled think the Trump administration had done a good job.

The US' reputation took a serious hit especially in Europe, the country's traditional ally. That number in the country has dropped significantly since previous year from 2017 when it was 75%.

Pew surveyed 13,273 adults from June 10 to August 3, a period also marked by mass protests in the United States against racial injustice.

"In no country surveyed do more than a fifth think the US has done at least a somewhat good job dealing with the virus, and a median of only 15 per cent across the 13 countries polled consider the country's handling of the virus to be effective", the centre said.

The survey was conducted among citizens from Japan, Australia, Canada, Great Britain, the Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, Italy, Sweden, France, Denmark, Germany and Belgium. The U.S. was not included in the survey.
