B.C. firefighters heading to OR to help with wildfires

‘It’ll start getting cooler, just watch’: Trump dismisses climate change concerns amid US fires

Both Crowfoot and Newsom had acknowledged that the state could do better with vegetation management, but insisted that climate change was responsible for the severity of the wildfires, which have torched 2.8 million acres of land and killed 24 people in just the past 30 days.

Firefighters with the Monitor Fire Department wait alongside the road surrounded by smoke in an area destroyed by a wildfire Saturday near Mill City, Ore.

Until this past weekend, the President had remained largely silent on the wildfires, which have charred millions of acres of land in California, triggered OR officials to prepare for a potential "mass fatality incident", and created apocalyptic orange skies and clouds raining ash that have drifted across cities throughout the West Coast. There are numerous smaller fires, too. Less obvious is the long-term effects to native species.

The fires have also affected OR to the north, and forced hundreds of thousands to evacuate.

"It's still overhead now", Dean Iovino, a National Weather Service meteorologist, said of the haze that was lingering over the Garden State late Wednesday morning. Up to 29 fires were active in the state Wednesday, spread over more than 843,500 acres.

"With no significant precipitation in sight, California remains dry and ripe for wildfires", state firefighting agency Cal Fire said, adding that warmer weather is expected this weekend "bringing elevated fire danger".

While officials on Monday had said 10 people were reported dead in OR, the state medical examiner later determined that two of those fatalities were unrelated to the fires, bringing the death toll down to eight.

California cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco as well as Portland in OR and Washington state's Seattle have registered some of the worst air quality in the world.

Gabriela Goldfarb, Environmental Public Health Section manager at the Oregon Health Authority, said smoke will clear up for most Oregonians between Friday and Saturday. The department further reported that over 4,100 structures have been destroyed and over 16,750 firefighters are working to contain the 29 major wildfires across California.

In some parts of OR, air quality has been so hazardous that it has gone beyond the scale of the state's Air Quality Index.

In the last one month, the wildfires, further fuelled by drought and high temperature conditions, have scorched some 3 million acres in California and another 1.6 million acres in OR and Washington states, leveling several small towns, destroying thousands of homes, and claiming at least 34 lives, according to media reports.
