Rich Nations Secured Deals For Half Of COVID-19 Vaccine Supply: Report

The Health Ministry (MOH) has a responsibility to explain to the people why Malaysia is not among the 172 countries that have signed up for the Covax Covid-19 vaccine access plan as the participation deadline is today, said Malaysian Medical Association (MMA).

More than half of all future Covid-19 vaccine doses will be concentrated in the hands of wealthy states comprising just about 13 percent of the world population, Oxfam warns without mentioning the options offered by Russian Federation.

Seth Berkley, head of the GAVI global vaccine alliance based in Switzerland and the United States, told Reuters that the plan known as Covax - which aims to help purchase and fairly distribute coronavirus vaccines - now has commitments from Japan, Germany, and Norway, among 76 upper middle income and high income nations, to procure Covid-19 vaccines through the facility for their populations.

The report noted that the very pharma companies now in the running to develop the vaccine do not have the capacity to make enough doses for all those who need it.

The organization has analyzed data collected by Airfinity on contracts reached so far by vaccine producers with countries around the world on the purchases of the five leading COVID-19 vaccine candidates, which are now in phase 3 clinical trials.

The group further warns that even if the five potential vaccines turn out to be sufficiently safe and effective-an unlikely scenario-the coming year would still be marked by the public health crisis because 61% of the world's population would likely not have a vaccine until at least 2022. But the company has sold the options for all of its supply to rich nations ― at prices ranging from $12-16 a dose in the U.S. to around $35 per dose for other countries.

An Oxfam report says 5.9 billion doses being prepared which should be enough to immunise around three billion people.

Province Imposes Hefty Fines for Breaking Social Gathering Rules
Ford said when the arrangement with pharmacies is finalized there will be thousands of places to get a COVID-19 test. Ford said new public health guidelines around social gatherings will be enforced in a press conference on Wednesday.

Oxfam calculated the production capacity of 5 vaccine candidates at 5.9 billion doses.

The remaining doses been bought or promised to countries including India, Bangladesh, China, Brazil, Indonesia and Mexico, as well as others.

The five vaccines analyzed were from AstraZeneca, Gamaleya/Sputnik, Moderna, Pfizer and Sinovac.

The economic case for requiring pharmaceutical companies to share their vaccine knowledge free of patents so that production can be scaled up as fast as possible could not be clearer.

For example, the United Kingdom government has secured the equivalent of five doses per person. "It is my strong hope that through this memorandum of understanding [MoU], once [COVID-19] vaccine is available we won't have any delay in delivering it to the people,". While Moderna has so far pledged doses of its vaccine exclusively to rich countries, AstraZeneca has pledged two-thirds (66 percent) of doses to developing countries. That effort would put the needs of public health above corporate profits and reject nationalist approaches towards vaccine acquisition.

To provide a vaccine for everyone across the world, the estimated cost is less than 1 percent of the projected cost of COVID-19 to the global economy. No single corporation will ever be able to meet the world's need for a COVID-19 vaccine.

There are hopes Governments, pharmaceutical companies and vaccine producers produce a vaccine that is free to all. The alliance calls for pharmaceutical corporations to share all vaccine knowledge with other companies and research institutions, including through the COVID-19 Technology Access Pool (C-TAP).
