Van Morrison targets coronavirus restrictions in 3 new songs

Van Morrison condemns ‘crooked facts’ of scientists in new anti-lockdown songs

A statement on the singer's website says the tracks, Born to Be Free, As I Walked Out, and No More Lockdown, will be available for download and streaming only from selected outlets. In them, Morrison makes it clear the he is deeply unhappy with the way the government has taken away personal freedoms.

He sings: "No more taking of our freedom/And our god-given rights/Pretending it's for our safety/When it's really to enslave".

Recorded "recently" in Belfast and England, Sir Van's three new songs sit in a familiar vein of jazz and bluesy R&B.

Award-winning musician Van Morrison will release the anti-lockdown songs in the coming weeks, one titled "Born To Be Free" is set to hit the airwaves next week.

The Belfast-born artist has accused the United Kingdom government of "taking our freedom" in three new songs that protest against the coronavirus lockdown.

"I know whose message I would rather listen to", Mr Swann told BBC Radio Ulster's Nolan programme.

Commenting on Lukashenko's statements late on Thursday, the Polish side said the situation at the border had remained unchanged. However, Associated Press video showed he was not holding any explosives when he fell to the ground, his shirt bloodied.

"I'm not telling people what to do or think, the government is doing a great job of that already", Morrison said in a statement announcing the songs.

"I don't know where he gets his facts", Swann said.

"Our messaging is about saving lives, so if Van wanted to sing about saving lives, that's more in keeping with where we are at this minute". "I believe people should have the right to think for themselves".

And, "No More Lockdown" has the lyrics: "No more lockdown/No more government overreach", the musician sings in the chorus. "Come forward, stand up, fight the pseudo-science and speak up", he said.

With Covid-19 cases now doubling every seven to eight days, the government is looking at introducing nationwide restrictions for a short period to try to "short-circuit" the virus and slow the spread of the disease. In August, Morrison tried to rally other musicians to "save live music" and campaign against socially distanced gigs.

His comments came as the United Kingdom considers a new "circuit-break" lockdown that would restrict socialising while trying to keep most of the economy open.
