Coronavirus: UK now 'seeing a second wave coming in'

"It is very hard to maintain that kind of discipline for a long time and what you've seen is the disease starting to spread again among young people and that's where it really started to kick off in France and Spain in those age groups and we are now seeing that here in this country".

Boris Johnson has suggested that coronavirus spreading "among young people" through a lack of social distancing has caused the recent surge of cases.

The Prime Minister insisted a second lockdown was the "last thing anybody wants", but added that the current measures would need to be kept "under review".

"On Monday, we brought in the measures that we did, the "rule of six", to really try and restrict what people are doing and to bring in a new buffer".

On being asked about the schools reopening, Johnson said, "What I can certainly say about parents and schools is we want to keep the schools open, that is going to happen".

"We now know an very bad lot more about the virus and can use a lot more sophisticated measures where we keep the economy going while targeting where we know the virus is breeding within society".

The Prime Minister, his every footstep followed by a personal protective equipment-wearing press pack, told the scientists: "In an ideal world, we would have this running right now".

The second tier would mirror the developments announced in the north-east of England, ahead of similar rules unveiled across the North West, Midlands and West Yorkshire, where curfews have been announced on hospitality venues and a ban on meetings between households.

But Johnson's spokesman said "no restrictions are now planned" in the capital.

An "on-off" approach to draconian lockdown restrictions is being considered as a possibility for the entire country to suppress the virus.

The Government is reported to be looking at a possible "circuit breaker" nationwide lockdown as soon as next week, which could last for a fortnight.

The Government is also said to be mulling introducing "targeted shielding" to enable people with serious medical conditions to receive tailored advice.

A further 350 cases were reported on Saturday in Scotland, the highest daily increase since May, 212 new cases in Wales, and 222 in Northern Ireland.
