Rich nations have cornered half of future Covid-19 vaccine supply: Oxfam

Covid-19 Group of rich countries have secured more than half of future vaccine supply says Oxfam

Bancel said he hoped preliminary results of the large-scale clinical trial would be available by October, but that a decline in the number of COVID-19 cases across the US has slowed the timeline, the Globe reports.

Pfizer, the other American company currently carrying out Phase 3 trials in the U.S., followed suit a short time later and there is now added pressure for the remainder to do the same.

These are Serum Institute of India in Pune, Cadila Healthcare Ltd., Ahmedabad, Bharat Biotech International Ltd in Hyderabad, Biological E Ltd., Hyderabad, Reliance Life Sciences Pvt Ltd in Mumbai, Aurbindo Pharma Limited in Hyderabad and Gennova Biopharmaceuticals Limited, Pune. The trial will be initiated in second half of October after the vaccine is manufactured by SII.

Moderna's candidate mRNA-1273 is an mRNA vaccine against Covid-19 encoding for a prefusion stabilized form of the Spike (S) protein and is being co-developed with investigators from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease's (NIAID) Vaccine Research Center.

Nine potential coronavirus vaccines are now undertaking clinical trials of which, supply deals of five companies have been made public, the report added. India is the manufacturing partner of Covishield, a vaccine candidate developed jointly by the University of Oxford's Jenner Institute and AstraZeneca.

The medicine's global trials were suspended last week after a participant had an unexplained illness, but were later restarted in the UK, Brazil, and South Africa. But it has resumed now.

Besides these, two vaccine candidates developed by Indian companies, Bharat Biotech and Zydus Cadila, are now undergoing combined phase-1 and phase-2 trials.

However, scientists worldwide have auctioned against the use of a coronavirus vaccine that has not fully cleared safety and efficacy trials.

The documents contain information about the criteria used for selecting trial participants, how they are being monitored and the evidence that will be used to assess whether the vaccine is effective.

Vaccines must demonstrate they are at least 50 percent more effective than a placebo to be considered for approval. The first results of these trials are expected to be published in October-November 2020, the RDIF said in its statement.

The analysis comes amid swelling calls from global leaders, health experts, and groups including Oxfam for a so-called people's vaccine for the novel coronavirus.

"We already face challenges with vaccine acceptance for many proven vaccines", World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in pre-recorded comments, as he spoke about the push to rapidly develop vaccines. 36 of them in clinical trials. Phase-1 clinical trials have been completed.

The documents described two unnamed vaccine candidates that must be stored at temperatures of minus 70 and minus 20 degrees Celsius.
