Hyundai Motor delivers first batch of hydrogen trucks to Switzerland

Hyundai delivers the first seven units of its fuel cell truck

To back its expansion plan, the company said it will raise the production capacity of the Xcient Fuel Cell to 2,000 units per year by 2021, by investing $1.3 billion.

Earlier this year, Hyundai Motor exported 10 units of Xcient Fuel Cell trucks, the world's first mass-produced heavy-duty trucks that run on hydrogen, to Switzerland from its Jeonju plant in North Jeolla.

It marks the official entry of Hyundai's commercial vehicles in the European market, "a touchstone for the company's expansion into the North American and Chinese commercial markets".

It sees Switzerland as a test case for hydrogen fuel cells in heavy goods transport, said In Cheol Lee, executive vice president and head of the commercial vehicle division at Hyundai.

Three fuel cell electric trucks are scheduled for launch in China, including a medium-duty truck in 2022, a heavy-duty truck in several years and another heavy-duty truck specifically designed for the China market. The increase in capacity will be backed by a $1.3 billion investment in addition to a previously announced $6.4 billion stake in establishing a hydrogen ecosystem.

Hyundai Motor Group, South Korea's top-selling vehicle producer, said Thursday that it aims to export 64,000 trucks powered by hydrogen engines by 2030, as it seeks to take advantage of the growing demand for environmentally friendly transportation.

School board north of Toronto scraps virtual school in favour of hybrid model
All York Catholic elementary schools will be closed to students of October 13 to make the transition. Families will hear from their child's school if their class is affected by the changes.

As Switzerland is around 3/5ths the size of Tasmania, the 400 kilometre range from the 33 kilogram hydrogen tanks fitted to the trucks makes sense for the small country, as does their top speed of 85km/h.

Hyundai is also working with a number of parties in China with an aim to get one million hydrogen vehicles on its roads by 2030 as the country's hydrogen industry continues to grow at scale.

South Korea's biggest carmaker by sales, said Thursday it aims to export 64,000 hydrogen-powered trucks by 2030 amid growing demand for environment-friendly vehicles. Refueling time for each truck takes approximately 8~20 minutes. HHM also is partnering with hydrogen producer Hydrospider AG. Hyundai prepares to put 1,600 trucks on Swiss roads by 2025.

For Europe, Hyundai has said it will next target Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, and Norway.

The hydrogen value chain includes hydrogen production, filling stations, as well as service and maintenance locations. They will be utilizing the trucks to haul everything from food to cars around Europe.

Engineers for the Korean company say the truck's range could theoretically be doubled just by compressing the hydrogen. The company produced hydrogen exclusively with renewable energy.
