United States jobless claims likely remain high as layoffs persist

Jobless claims have remained historically high over the course of the pandemic

Unemployment claims in Idaho continue to fall, decreasing for the 22nd consecutive week.

"Even as a steady number of workers file new claims, increasing numbers of workers are exhausting their unemployment benefits", Andrew Stettner, senior fellow at the Century Foundation, told International Business Times in an email, noting the remaining provisions of the CARES Act expire December 31.

The article noted that the level of claims is still very high indicating a slowdown in recovery. Thursday's report consists of a quote based upon previous claims for the state.

ABC News reports, California has "temporarily stopped accepting new unemployment claims in order to work though a backlog and implement fraud prevention technology". Of those, some 739 were self-employed workers and 1,230 were seeking extended benefits after their traditional aid ran out.

More than 800,000 people filed for new claims in the last week, according to the US Labour Department. "The report continued to exclude California's numbers as the state put applications on hold for two weeks, announced on September 19, to revamp its system".

Kristen Stewart opens up about feeling 'enormous pressure' to publicly come out
Stewart revealed in the InStyle interview the lengths she went to, even in her early relationships, to hide from the media. I've some friends who will not cease, and it is everything they talk about.

"The level of claims is still staggeringly high", said Daniel Zhao, senior economist at the career site Glassdoor.

President Donald Trump this week called off negotiations with Democrats on the next round of economic stimulus, pushing instead for separate bills dealing only with $1,200 checks to individuals, and aid to airlines and small businesses - an approach House Speaker Nancy Pelosi rejected earlier.

New applications for United States jobless benefits were barely changed last week, the Labor Department said Thursday, as the economy continues to struggle in its recovery from the coronavirus shutdowns earlier this year. And with winter weather looming, restaurants and other businesses that were able to shift operations outdoors during warmer weather could be forced to pull back anew.

Continued claims, which count people who have filed for benefits for at least two weeks in a row, stood at 11 million, down nearly 1 million.

"It seems increasingly unlikely that we'll have a deal before the election, and bills are due now", Zhao said.
