Britain Urges Businesses to Prepare for End of Brexit Transition Period

Boris May Submit to European Court of Human Rights for EU Deal

British prime minister Boris Johnson called both French president Emmanuel Macron and German chancellor Angela Merkel this weekend to discuss how to break the impasse on the contentious issue of fishing rights post-Brexit ahead of an important meeting of European Union leaders on Thursday.

Johnson said the country is committed to "exploring every avenue" to reach an agreement on Brexit talks, in a phone call to France's president Macron yesterday, in which he also urged the need for progress to be made in the coming days.

Earlier, the minister said that the European Union and the United Kingdom must hammer out an agreement defining their post-Brexit relationship by early November.

He said there were no plans for a formal statement from negotiators on Friday and that work towards a deal would continue next week.

The two chief negotiators, the EU's Michel Barnier and Britain's David Frost, say they are inching towards a deal ahead of an October 15 deadline, but that important gaps remain on fishing, level playing field issues and governance.

Britain wants a deal more like that of non-EU member Norway, under which quotas are set each year.

In practice, this was adopted by American authorities in 1994 as a method to sell radio frequencies to telecom operators. The prize closes the 2020 Nobel season which so far has seen the peace prize awarded to the UN's World Food Programme.

An "Australia-style" agreement means trading on World Trade Organization terms, with no specific free trade deal.

While both sides have reported progress in the negotiations, there remain significant issues, particularly on the issues of fisheries and state aid.

Negotiators from the two sides will meet in Brussels on Monday.

In such an event the two parties would spend next month trying to put together "mini-deals" for industries such as aviation and road transport to offset the likely disruption when the transition period ends, The Times said.

Britain and the European Union started their lengthy and bumpy post-Brexit talks in March after Britain ended its European Union membership on January 31, trying to secure a future trade deal before the Brexit transition period expires at the end of the year. "The coming days are crucial, this is the moment of truth", he said.
