IKEA to 'buy back' and resell old furniture

Ikea To Start Buying Back Cust

Now, just when we thought we couldn't love IKEA anymore, the Swedish chain is buying back customers' old and unwanted furniture in the name of sustainability.

This fall, IKEA will also open its first store that will sell only refurbished furniture and sustainably produced products.

Items will then be resold as second-hand in the As-Is Area of stores (previously known as Bargain Corner).

Items including dressers, display cabinets, bookcases, dining tables and chairs, chests of drawers, children's bed frames, small tables and chairs without upholstery will be eligible for buy-back.

If someone returns an old bookcase or dresser instead of leaving it at the curb, they will be given a voucher for as much as half of the original price of the item, depending on the condition.

The initiative aims to reduce waste and fight climate change. In exchange, customers get an IKEA gift card for up to 50 percent of the original price. Furniture in "very good" condition with minor scratches may receive 40% of the original price, and "well-used" items, with several scratches, could receive 30% of the original price.

Customers will have to fill out a form and drop it off at an IKEA store.

John Cena marries girlfriend Shay Shariatzadeh in a private ceremony
Cena and Shariatzadeh seemingly got serious fairly quickly into their relationship as they're often spotted kissing in public. The couple called off their wedding after splitting up in 2018. "We were trying so hard to make it one".

On Black Friday this year, Ikea Canada is encouraging customers to trade in their gently-used Ikea furniture for double the sell-back value through in-store credit. The items will be resold as secondhand in the "As-Is" section of stores.

Peter Jelkeby, Country Retail Manager and Chief Sustainability Officer IKEA UK & Ireland, commented:"Sustainability is the defining issue of our time and IKEA is committed to being part of the solution to promote sustainable consumption and combat climate change".

IKEA said that anything that can not be resold will be recycled or donated to charity.

Customers will be able to take advantage of the scheme in branches in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

"Our intention is to on-sell your products to a new home, and we want to ensure that "buy-back" products purchased by customers are of a high quality and meet our obligations under the Competition and Consumer Act 2010".

"Being circular is a good business opportunity as well as a responsibility, and the climate crisis requires us all to radically rethink our consumption habits", she said.
