Kitbag: Joaquin Phoenix to Portray Napoleon Bonaparte in Ridley Scott Biopic

Joaquin Phoenix, victor of the award for best performance by an actor in a leading role for "Joker", on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2020. Pheonix will play the role of French military leader and emperor Napoleon.

Joaquin Phoenix as emperor Commodus at'Gladiator' (2000). Interestingly, this very French historical figure been played on film by non-French actors twice as often as he has by a fellow countryman, which suggests he inspires a level of cross-cultural fascination that, say, Winston Churchill or General George S Patton do not.

The movie's title is derived from the saying "There's a common's employees hidden in each soldier's kitbag".

Variety reports that the Oscar victor will play French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte in Kitbag. Kitbag will see Ridley Scott tackle the story of Napoleon in what's described as an "original and personal look at Napoleon's origins and his swift, ruthless climb to the emperor". The intention of the movie is to seize Napoleon's well-known battles, relentless ambition and astounding strategic thoughts as a rare army chief and warfare visionary.

The film is scheduled to start pre-production early next year once Scott finishes work on his upcoming Gucci murder mystery. The film will be produced by Scott and Kevin Walsh for his production company, Scott Free, and it will be backed by 20th Century Studios. The actor is known for his eclectic performances and roles. Scott is to direct from a screenplay now being written by David Scarpa, who penned Scott's All the Money in the World and whose credits include 2008's The Day the Earth Stood Still and 2001's The Last Castle. His oscar-winning stint as the Joker in last year's Joker (2019), makes his casting a sound decision from the makers part.
