Trials of Russian COVID-19 Vaccine Start in Venezuela, President Maduro Says

Philippines eyes Sinovac trial as early as November

The Covid-19 vaccine Pfizer is developing with Germany's BioNTech will probably not be available for emergency use until after the United States presidential election, the company said Friday.

Trump has said repeatedly that there would be a vaccine available before the election, but health officials and companies had only said that data might be available this month.

A 400 yuan (S$80) double-dose experimental coronavirus vaccine is being made available to some residents in an eastern Chinese city, health officials have said, the first details of a mass rollout for an as-yet unproven vaccine.

The two-shot vaccine, "EpiVacCorona", was tested among 100 volunteers in early-stage, placebo-controlled human trials, which lasted more than two months and were completed two weeks ago.

The first patient enrolled in Pfizer's COVID-19 coronavirus vaccine clinical trial at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore received an injection in May.

Russian Federation has approved its second coronavirus vaccine, President Vladimir Putin announced Wednesday as the peptide-based shot developed by a Siberian biotech company readies for large-scale trials.

Pfizer, which is partnering with German company BioNTech on the research, gained more than two percent in online trading ahead of the opening of USA markets.

Twitter changes policies after criticism for restricting anti-Biden content
Other users complained that they were still blocked from sharing the Post story, suggesting the rule change hadn't yet come into effect.

Without further data on how effective the vaccine is and how long immunity from it may last, it's also hard to know what impact any of the shots now in phase III trials will have on controlling the pandemic.

That October timeline sounded even more aggressive when Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel, known for touting ambitious goals, said his company's shot, which was the first in the U.S.to move into clinical testing, likely wouldn't have data until November.

The second Russian vaccine to receive regulatory approval was developed by the Vector State Research Centre of Virology and Biotechnology. During a digital event in September, he also said the company expected initial results in late October and would seek FDA authorization as soon as possible.

This comes at a time when COVID-19 cases in the USA are climbing slightly, but the coronavirus deaths are relatively level this month. Another U.S. trial of a candidate from Johnson & Johnson JNJ.N was paused earlier this week.

On Tuesday, pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly said it paused a government-sponsored antibody treatment trial because of a "potential safety concern".

Polls show many Americans are hesitant about taking a coronavirus vaccine and concerned that the approval process could be driven by politics.
