Twitter changes policies after criticism for restricting anti-Biden content

Twitter reverses policy on hacked content after Hunter Biden backlash

The New York Post published an exclusive story titled "Smoking-gun email reveals how Hunter Biden introduced Ukrainian business to VP dad", reporting that "Hunter Biden introduced his father, then-Vice President Joe Biden, to a top executive at a Ukrainian energy firm less than a year before the elder Biden pressured government officials in Ukraine into firing a prosecutor who was investigating the company".

Other users complained that they were still blocked from sharing the Post story, suggesting the rule change hadn't yet come into effect.

According to Vijaya Gadde, a Legal, Policy and Trust & Safety Lead at Twitter, the move has triggered "significant feedback" from the users over the past 24 hours, "from critical to supportive".

"The attempt to rig an election, which is what we're seeing here by monopolies, is unprecedented in American history", Hawley said this week.

Twitter is changing its Hacked Materials Policy, walking back a set of rules at the heart of its enforcement action this week against a controversial article that included potentially damaging allegations against U.S. presidential candidate Joe Biden.

And instead of blocking links from being shared, tweets will be labeled to provide context, Gadde said.

President Donald Trump's Son, Barron Tested Positive For Coronavirus
Barron Trump , President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump photographed in August on the South Lawn of the White House. Leveler Joe Biden has earned President Trump's reaction to the coronavirus pandemic a problem in the presidential crusade.

Gadde said the firm made the change to address "concerns that there could be many unintended consequences to journalists, whistleblowers and others in ways that are contrary to Twitter's objective of serving the public conversation".

"Straight blocking of URLs was wrong, and we updated our policy and enforcement to fix", he tweeted.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey addresses students during a town hall at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in New Delhi, India, November 12, 2018.

We believe that labeling tweets and empowering people to assess content for themselves better serves the public interest and public conversation. "We are trying to act responsibly & quickly to prevent harms, but we're still learning along the way". Twitter blocked some people from sharing links to the story, and those who clicked on links that were shared were blocked from visiting the New York Post website. "The Hacked Material Policy is being updated to reflect these new enforcement capabilities". Just spitballing here but if - say - on the poll's eve, Trump were to share some highly dubious information that smeared his key political rival and which he said he'd been handed by Russian president, Vladimir Putin, would Twitter step in and remove it?

But the newspaper's source for the information raised questions.
