Yemen, Saudi-Led Coalition to Begin Swap of over 1,000 Prisoners

As part of the swap more than 200 Houthis were allowed to return to Yemen from Oman

The planned exchange comes after the release Wednesday of two Americans held captive in Yemen, in an apparent swap for some 240 Huthi supporters who were allowed to return home after being stranded in neighbouring Oman.

ICRC spokeswoman Ruth Hetherington said more than 700 prisoners had been exchanged on Thursday on a total of seven flights from Sayoun, Sanaa and Abha.

A short while ago, the first plane carrying the first batch of freed Yemeni prisoners of the Army and Popular Committees arrived at Sana'a International Airport, Al Masirah reported.

"This operation that means so much to so many families is under way", Fabrizio Carboni, ICRC regional director for the Middle East, told Reuters, speaking from Sanaa airport.

Griffiths also hoped the Yemeni warring parties will soon reconvene under the United Nations auspices to discuss the release of all conflict-related prisoners and detainees.

More than 350 prisoners were freed on Friday on the second and final day of a landmark exchange between the warring sides in Yemen, the International Committee of the Red Cross said.

One of the planes was carrying Saudi and Sudanese detainees and flew to Saudi Arabia.

In recent days, Iranian-backed Shiite militiamen have also released two U.S. prisoners, long in their hands; at the same time, around 200 Houthis were able to return from Oman, where they had gone in the past to receive medical treatment. He also said he hoped another, bigger swap deal could be agreed. It said the plane coming from Sanaa airport carried 15 Saudis and four Sudanese.

During the UN-brokered negotiations in Stockholm in 2018, Yemen's government and Houthi rebels agreed to swap some 15,000 detainees as part of a peace deal, but have only conducted minor prisoner exchanges since then.

Meanwhile, the Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya TV aired live footage of freed Yemeni government prisoners disembarking their plane in Seyun airport in the eastern province of Hadramawt, which is controlled by forces loyal to Yemen's Saudi-backed government.

Yemen has been at war since the Houthis ousted the internationally recognised government from power in Sanaa in late 2014, prompting the coalition to intervene in 2015.

Yemen, the size of California and home to over 29 million people, faces the world's worst humanitarian crisis - on the brink of starvation and reeling from COVID-19, cholera, malnutrition and the destruction of hospitals.
