Thai protesters vow to return to streets after Friday clashes

Protesters hold up three fingers during anti Government demonstrations in Bangkok Thailand

Protesters have been calling for PM Prayuth's resignation and curbing the power of King Maha Vajiralongkorn in the country.

The prime minister called on the government to enforce emergency rules but asked that all officials avoid violence, according to a statement from Anucha Burapachaisri, spokesman for the administration.

Two other activists were arrested on Friday under a rarely used law banning "violence against the queen" after they joined a group Wednesday that surrounded a royal motorcade carrying Queen Suthida, flashing a pro-democracy salute as the vehicle drove by.

Three protesters and four police personnel were hurt on Friday, said the Erawan Medical Center, an emergency response unit in Bangkok.

"We were not notified by the police of the upcoming royal motorcade in which we had no way of knowing because they were not informing us", one of the two activists, Paothong Bunkueanum, told reporters before he was arrested.

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha has yet to lift the state of severe emergency declared on Thursday that bans gatherings of five or more people in Bangkok.

Around 2,000 pro-democracy demonstrators in the city's main shopping mall district had been chanting for the release of arrested activists and hurled obscenities at Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha. In a press conference Friday, he said his government hoped to revoke the state of emergency before its normal 30-day duration "if the situation improves quickly", DW reported.

Also Friday, police searched the offices of the Progressive Movement, a group formed by former lawmakers from a reform-minded political party that was controversially dissolved by the constitutional Court. "It's all damage to the country".

However, Wasim insisted that this is not reciprocal to Pakistan's summer tour to England in the middle of COVID-19 pandemic. Pakistan did not host Test cricket for 10 years following an attack by gunmen on the Sri Lanka team in 2009.

Earlier Saturday, protesters announced plans to gather at elevated-train stations and subway stations, prompting the transit operators to halt services until further notice.

Many spoke of their anger at the authorities' use of water cannon against demonstrators on Friday.

"The (use of force) will increase the numbers of protesters", said 21-year-old Nine, an engineering student.

Police said that their response to Friday's protest had been proportionate and in line with global norms.

The arrests are linked to an incident that took place on Wednesday, where the queen's motorcade drove past protestors in Bangkok who shouted and defiantly held up the iconic three-finger salute from the "Hunger Games" film franchise, which became a symbol of liberation in Thailand soon after the military coup in 2014. The call by the protesters for reform of the monarchy has significantly raised the political temperature in Thailand. Police were seen pushing back protesters as the auto, which also carried King Maha Vajiralongkorn's youngest son, Prince Dipangkorn, slowly drove past.

The protest locations - Lat Phrao, Wongwian Yai and Udomsuk - were announced on social media at short notice in a bid to outsmart the authorities who had closed off parts of the city they suspected would be used for the protests.

The scenes of water cannon and protesters pushing back with umbrellas were similar to images from anti-government demonstrations in Hong Kong, with which Thai activists make common cause.

The Bangkok Post said some 20,000 people had turned out to protest. "Only governments should be afraid of their people".
