Welsh Government to ban travel to Wales from UK Covid Hotspots

Trent Bridge area of Nottingham

"We are preparing to take this action to prevent people who live in areas where there are higher COVID infection rates across the United Kingdom from travelling to Wales and bringing the virus with them", he said.

Mr Drakeford said the law will be "essentially created to prevent people going to those holiday parts of Wales, the far west and the far southwest of Wales, where the virus is still in very low circulation".

Mark Bleasdale, Welsh lead for the Police Federation of England and Wales, said: "On the face of it, this is unenforceable because of the difficulty of identifying where people are coming from and where they are going to".

The UK government's Welsh Secretary Simon Hart said the decision risks "stirring division and confusion", but Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said she fully supported Mr Drakeford's move.

"Mr Davies also referred to a paper that accompanied the First Minister's letter to the Prime Minister yesterday, a paper - that was not peer-reviewed - that confirms the data "...does not constitute definitive proof" in favour of a travel ban".

The Commons leader said: "What would you expect of a hard-left Labour government?" He argued that they need the "force of law behind them" to make it effective.

Manchester United Triggers Pogba Contract Extension, Secures Midfielder For 2 Years
We can't listen to everyone outside. "There are many reasons behind subs in a game and if I explain every time I take a player off, I don't think that's the right thing."

"It would have been much more preferences to have set out a reasoned answer in writing between the first minister and the prime minister, I just think that's disappointing, but we have regular conversation between officials and ministers on other subjects". "He could have helped people in Wales and elsewhere to protect themselves against the flow of virus into areas where the virus is still effectively suppressed". But so far I've had no success in persuading him of this simple and straightforward course of action.

"From the outset, our guidance has also been very clear that people from very high prevalence areas should avoid travelling in or out of that area". The Prime Minister's spokesperson argued: "There are no physical borders between Wales and England".

The first minister told Sky News earlier that his government was carrying out "detailed planning" for a potential short national lockdown in Wales. There will be a powerful message to people: "they're not to come into Wales to low incidence areas".

"As a general rule, it is concentrating in urban areas and then spreading to more sparsely populated areas as a result of people travelling".

He said that the police will be conducting extra patrols on main roads to enforce the travel ban in the devolved nation, and added that the police will be able to issue fixed penalty notices for those found to be in breach of the rules.

However hard it may be to enforce, the sad truth is that these measures are beginning to look necessary once more; at a press conference earlier today, Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford revealed that the nation's caseload has reached 100 per 100,000 people.
