#EndSARS: Activist explains movement, Nigeria protests against police brutality

Nigerian Police Seen Shooting Protestor In Back: Report

At least 51 civilians have been killed in Nigeria's unrest following days of peaceful protests over police abuses, the president said Friday, blaming "hooliganism" for the violence while asserting that security forces have used "extreme restraint". The disturbing act apparently took place yesterday, in the Nigerian city of Lagos, as a group of armed police proceeded to surround several protestors.

On Tuesday night, security forces fired without warning into crowds of thousands of protesters, killing 12, Amnesty said, citing witnesses and camera images.

"In the circumstances, I would like to appeal to protesters to note and take advantage of the various well-thought-out initiatives of this administration created to make their lives better and more meaningful", he said.

Clarifying his statement that forces beyond him were behind the deployment of troops to Lekki axis, the governor said the hierarchy and chains of command in the military were not within his purview, adding that this was not something he had responsibility for.

In his short speech, Buhari called on protesters to stop demonstrating and the worldwide community, which has expressed concern over the incident, to "know all facts".

Worldwide condemnation has snowballed in recent days with the United States, African Union, European Union and Britain all criticising authorities for using excessive force.

United Nations secretary-general António Guterres has called for an end to police brutality in Nigeria, while United Nations high commissioner for human rights Michelle Bachelet has acknowledged that "root and branch" reform of the security sector is necessary.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called for an immediate investigation into violence by security forces but Buhari has brushed off all foreign rebukes.

In response to criticism from fellow African heads of state and other world leaders, Buhari called on them "to seek to know all the facts available before taking a position, or rushing to judgment and making hasty pronouncements".

The president said he was deeply pained that innocent lives had been lost but did not respond to claims that the Nigerian army and police were behind some of the killings.

"No empathy. No hope".

The protests have decried the use of excessive force by police, and especially by the now-defunct SARS unit, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad police group created in late 1992.

"They have said that before, haven't they?"

The army has denied soldiers were at the site of the shooting at Lekki toll gate in Lagos, where people had gathered in defiance of the curfew.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet said reports that lights were turned off and surveillance cameras removed at the scene beforehand suggested it was "premeditated, planned and coordinated". The wreckage of a dozen cars smouldered in the upscale Ikoyi neighbourhood and two official buildings were ablaze.

They then listened to people give speeches and Mr Edwards said that he could see the passion that people had for this cause. "We are just hungry, we are exhausted".

Scores of rioters broke into a warehouse and stole food.

Nigeria, where many live in extreme poverty and where the median age is 18, is a tinderbox of economic and social grievances.
