Federal Bureau of Investigation to assist probe into police shooting of Black couple in IL

Police have said the vehicle, which was being driven by Williams, fled as a white officer approached them following a traffic stop just before midnight.

The vehicle fled, according to a statement, but was quickly spotted by another officer. Police said that as the second officer approached, the vehicle started moving in reverse and the officer - fearing for his safety - opened fire.

Police said no weapon was found in the vehicle.

'Why did you shoot? I have a license.

"When I got there, she said, 'Momma, they just shot us for nothing, '" Ms Johnson said.

'Why did you just flame up my auto like that?

Activist Chris Blanks said Thursday that the police video of the shooting is particularly important because the police version of events and the version Clifftina Johnson said her wounded daughter, Williams, shared with her appear to contradict each other. "I'm nervous for Waukegan", Cunningham said.

Williams' mother said her daughter asked about Stinnette, but that she did not have the heart to tell her that he was dead.

Police have so far not confirmed why the couple had been pulled over for the initial traffic stop.

The Waukegan, Illinois, officer, who has still not been named, was sacked late Friday, according to Waukegan Chief of Police Wayne Walles. The white officer who initially stopped the couple is also a five-year veteran of the department. Waukegan Police submitted body camera and squad vehicle video to the Illinois State Police. And an email was sent to Illinois State Police seeking updated information.

In the 1960s, its Hispanic population grew, and Black and Puerto Rican residents often allied against school segregation, housing discrimination and unequal pay, according to Josh Bill, president of the Waukegan Historical Society. It could have been me'.

A protest rally and march were planned for Saturday in Waukegan, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) north of Chicago, to demand justice.

Local Black Lives Matter organizer Clyde McLemore said he wants the police officers involved to be prosecuted.

The investigation is being handled by the Illinois State Police, a fact reiterated by the police chief in his statement Friday night.

"We do not trust the police narrative in this case", Crump said.

'We're not here to rip up our own town, ' McLemore said.

The shooting has led to local protests. The officer was initially placed on administrative leave.
