Pat Riley Ripped for Saying Lakers' 2020 Championship Deserves an Asterisk

Heat Pat Riley Lakers

Miami Heat president Pat Riley is trying to do some cleanup on comments he made about the NBA Finals deserving an asterisk. The legendary coach and executive proceeded to say that the Lakers won fair and square, saying they were the better team in the series. "But there will be always be that asterisk; if we had Bam and Goran 100 percent - Goran was our leading scorer [entering the Finals] - it might have gone to a seventh game", Riley said per the Miami Herald.

"But there's always going to be asterisk, that caveat", he continued. "But I'm not going to look back on it, I'm just going to look at all the positive things".

On the heels of the Los Angeles Lakers' 17th championship in franchise history, there is chatter about the latest title's status on whether it should have an asterisk.

Coca-Cola to Cut 200 Beverage Brands

"I would like to see what it would be like with everybody whole". "We'll get our chance again". I'm just so proud of what our guys did...

Despite the applaudable efforts of Jimmy Butler, Tyler Herro, and Duncan Robinson, the Heat were overwhelmed by LeBron and Anthony Davis.

Critics immediately seized on Riley's comment, suggesting he was shading the Lakers or refusing to give them credit.

And the response on social media reflected that. Both stars missed multiple games of the National Basketball Association finals, and thus Riley feels that the world didn't get to see how to full strength sides would have competed for that elusive Larry O'Brien trophy.
