Eight children killed in Cameroon school attack ― UN

At least six children killed in attack on Cameroonian school

Army spokesman Cyrille Atonfack Guemo told AFP that seven children had been killed, while the government had initially spoken of six "murdered" and the United Nations said at least eight were killed and twelve wounded by gunfire and blows from machetes.

Secessionists wish to establish an independent state in Cameroon's English-speaking west. Reuters was not immediately able to confirm that claim.

"They found the children in class and they opened fire on them", city sub-prefect Ali Anougou told the Reuters news agency.

Boniface Tamungwa, a pastor in Kumba who arrived the scene of the incident, said his 11-year old was among the children killed.

Some kids were harmed jumping from second-storey windows.

Thousands of people have been killed and hundreds of thousands displaced, with civilians suffering from the clashes between separatists and security forces.

A statement Saturday from the local UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said the assailants had also used machetes.

‘I voted for a guy named Trump’
Trump, who owns the Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, changed his residency status to the Sunshine State from his native NY in 2019. President Donald Trump cast his vote in the U.S. election and then told reporters, "I voted for a man named Trump".

America condoled with the families of the children killed, the wounded, their family members, and all others affected.

Videos circulating on social media filmed by local journalists showed adults rushing from the school with children in their arms, surrounded by a crowd of wailing onlookers.

An initial report by a local official had given a death toll of four students.

Prominent separatist leader Ayuk Tabe described the attack as "inhumane" in a Twitter post and said "anyone responsible for these atrocities must be brought to book".

It was carried out by "groups of armed secessionist terrorists", he added.

Both sides stand accused of violence against civilians, which began in 2016 after residents in the country's Anglophone provinces, where 20% of Cameroon's population live, protested the government led by French speakers.

Last year, officials blamed separatists for kidnapping dozens of schoolchildren, charges the separatists denied.
