2 kayakers are nearly swallowed by a humpback whale in California

Two kayakers were knocked into the water Monday by a humpback whale.

While some video footage makes it appear as the women went inside the whale's mouth, McSorley says their kayak just overturned, and they were thrown underwater.

Small fish can be seen flying around the pair, so the whale could have been trying to grab a bite to eat.

Note: There is cursing in the above video, viewer discretion is advised.

Whale watchers have close encounter near Avila Beach. Humpback whales can be spotted off the Central Coast from late April to early December. Another pair of kayakers were hoisted upward by a whale in San Luis Obispo Bay last week, but they managed to remain in their boat.

"The whale was in my face, literally", said Cottriel, who recounted having the instinct to "push the whale out of the way".

"I'm thinking to myself, 'I'm gonna push.' Like, I'm gonna push a whale out of the way!"

"I thought it was going land on me".

"It was the weirdest thought", she told Fox 26. I'm thinking, 'I'm dead. Video taken of the episode indicated that the pair of women, who were shaken but unharmed, were almost enveloped in the whale's mouth.

The next thing McSorley knew, she was lifted up and tossed into the water.

Miraculously the pair were unharmed in the incident, but McSorely did lose her auto keys - a small price to pay when you consider how it might have ended.

Several paddle boarders reportedly came to their rescue before they hopped back on their kayak and rode back to shore.

Liz said: 'I was infatuated by them and in awe.

"I thought we were going to tip over for sure", one of the kayakers, Kathleen MacMahon, told the Fresno Bee.
