Prince William welcomes new probe into 1995 Diana interview

Explosive Diana with Martin Bashir in the interview

Britain's Prince William has welcomed a new investigation into how the BBC secured a famous 1995 interview with his mother Princess Diana after accusations that she had been tricked into taking part. This bombastic interview put Lady Di at odds with the royal family once and for all.

Diana's TV appearance was watched by 23 million people at the time and sent shockwaves through the monarchy.

It follows allegations by Diana's brother Earl Spencer that Mr Bashir showed him "false bank statements" to help gain access to the princess.

In a statement, Kensington Palace said the Duke of Cambridge has tentatively welcomed the inquiry, saying: "The independent investigation is a step in the right direction".

It comes after Diana's brother alleged that BBC journalist Martin Bashir used forged bank statements to convince her to do the interview.

It will also look at revelations made by Spencer this month about Bashir to the Daily Mail, which said the reporter made "lurid claims" about Queen Elizabeth II, Charles and other royals.

The BBC on Wednesday announced that it will conduct a probe immediately on the explosive 1995 interview with Princess Diana that first time unveiled her troubled marriage.

These claims included that Diana's private correspondence was being opened, her auto tracked and phones tapped - described by the Mail as "preposterous lies".

The BBC described Dyson, a former Supreme Court judge, as "an eminent and highly respected figure who will lead a thorough process".

So I think there's respect, there's an acceptance the situation is not ideal for anybody, but I understand their world and I think they understand ours as well".

She famously said "there were three people" in her marriage - her, Charles and his long-time lover Camilla Parker-Bowles - and also revealed she had been unfaithful.

That inquiry is understood to have found that Bashir, who the BBC says is seriously unwell with COVID-19, had "done wrong", but it is not known what sanction, if any, he faced.

"This is an important investigation which I will start straight away", said John Dyson, the former Supreme Court justice appointed to lead the inquiry.

Charles and Diana pose following their engagement.

The BBC's new director-general Tim Davie said yesterday: "The BBC is determined to get to the truth about these events and that is why we have commissioned an independent investigation".

But the corporation has said that the documents played no part in her decision to take part in the interview.

The Princess died in a Paris vehicle crash in 1997 as she was pursued by members of the paparazzi.

Prince William has spoken out in favor of a new internal investigation launched by the British Broadcasting Company BBC at the request of Earl Spencer, the uncle of Princes William and Harry.
