Theo Epstein leaves Cubs; will he take Mets opening?

Theo Epstein

It was announced earlier on Tuesday that Epstein, 46, is stepping down from his role as president of baseball operations with the Chicago Cubs.

Jed Hoyer, who worked alongside Epstein with the Red Sox and now serves as executive vice president and general manager of the Cubs, will step into the position effective November 20. Epstein was entering the final year of his contract and leaves after nine seasons. When he first arrived he tore the club down to completely rebuild, and after a few very lean years, the project culminated in the 2016 World Series title.

Prior to joining the Cubs, Epstein engineered the end of an 86-year World Series drought in Boston as the Red Sox rolled to titles in 2004 and 2007.

Hoyer now serves the Cubs as general manager.

They also have some familiarity with James Bond - after all, they did feature 006 in one of their games as an elusive target. However, no Bond game has ever come close to the success and cultural impact of Rare's GoldenEye 007 on Nintendo 64.

The Phillies are set to make a run at Theo Epstein despite his intention to take a break this season, according to 670 The Score's Bruce Levine. The Cubs hadn't won the championship in 108 years.

He will be replaced by Jed Hoyer, who joined the team as Executive Vice-President and General Manger in 2011. "But having some firm ideas in my mind of what I think is best for me and best for my family, I do hope and expect to have a third chapter in baseball, but in no shape or form do I expect to do it right away". "The timing is right for a number of reasons, and most importantly we are both thrilled that Jed is the person succeeding Theo".

Chairman Tom Ricketts said the Cubs are "grateful for everything he has given to this organization and this city".
