Apple to pay another US$113M to settle iPhone battery claims

Apple to Pay Another $113 Million to State Prosecutors for 'Batterygate'

Apple defended its actions as a way to prevent unintended shutdowns of the older iPhones as their batteries deteriorated but critics contended the company did it to help spur more consumers to upgrade to newer models. It was a scandal that was fittingly dubbed as "batterygate" and it led to a class action lawsuit.

Apple has agreed to pay millions of dollars to 34 states in USA over its controversial previous practice of deliberately slowing down older iPhones to extend their battery life. The Washington Post first reported the news.

Apple did not immediately reply to request for comment. (Apple) regarding Apple's 2016 decision to throttle consumers' iPhone speeds in order to address unexpected shutdowns in some iPhones. While Apple didn't specify specifically what was going on, the company did acknowledge in its update notes that the lock screen may "become unresponsive on iPhone 12 Mini". The investigators alleged that Apple was aware that its updates were slowing devices down but failed to inform customers of the practice.

"Big Tech companies must stop manipulating consumers and tell them the whole truth about their practices and products", Arizona Attorney General Mark Bronovich said in a statement. "I'm committed to holding these goliath technology companies to account if they hide the truth from their users".

The payment comes after another separate settlement agreed in March, in which Apple agreed to pay up to $500 million to users who had been affected.

At the time, the company issued a rare apology, temporarily dropped the price of replacement batteries by half to $40, and added a feature to allow iPhone users to monitor battery health.

"This isn't the only financial penalty levied against Apple for the matter, but numerous payments amount to a drop in the bucket when compared to Apple's sales â€" last month, the company reported $US26.4 billion in revenue from iPhones alone in its fiscal fourth quarter earnings.

The tech titan has since promised to create a website that will make it explicitly clear if an iOS update would affect a phone's battery and performance.
