While it remains to be seen which vaccines will be made available first, Graham Snyder, associate professor in Pitt's School of Medicine Division of Infectious Diseases, said once detailed data on safety and efficacy has been published, UPMC will evaluate the data and make available any vaccine deemed safe and effective.

"However as the vaccine was well tolerated in the study and was effective in similarly aged individuals, this suggests that it could be both well tolerated and effective in older and more infirm individuals in a care home setting".

The Oxford Vaccine Group's director, Andrew Pollard, said in a media briefing there were "lots of cases" of infections in its Phase III trial in Britain, Brazil and South Africa. "The populations at greatest risk of serious Covid-19 disease include people with existing health conditions and older adults", Ramasamy said.

The Federal Government has committed to buying 33.8 million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, with 3.8 million of them to be imported from overseas manufacturing plants.

Speaking today after Oxford-AstraZeneca released preliminary results showing an average efficacy of 70 per cent, with one dosage option giving 90 per cent protection, Mr Hunt said he had spoken to the country's two most senior health officials, Brendan Murphy and Paul Kelly. These included people of all ages. "Cellular immune responses were also induced in all age and dose groups, peaking at day 14 after vaccination", noted the research paper.

"Immunisation with ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 results in the development of neutralising antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in nearly 100 per cent of participants including older adults without severe co-morbidities, with higher levels in boosted compared with non-boosted groups".

The T-cell response - another measure of how well the immune system responds - peaked two weeks after the first dose of the vaccine, regardless of age.

Antibodies play an important role in the immune response to viruses. The adenovirus is also altered so it doesn't spread throughout the body.

"The participants in this study continue to be monitored to assess how well the immune responses are maintained over a longer time period", the research team said.

"We are closer than ever to a vaccine, and we'll be able to vaccinate every Australian that wants to be vaccinated".

Despite recent progress, Pollard said the world is still in the early stages of the effort to protect people against COVID-19. "With the current low transmission levels in the United Kingdom, this could take many months", they add.

The researchers say they have completed recruitment of over 10,000 people to its Phase 2-3 study, which aims to assess the efficacy of the vaccine, and to compare the different dose schedules.
