The Eta Aquarid Meteor Shower Peaks Tonight

The Qatar Calendar House announced that the residents of the State of Qatar will be on a date with the vision and monitoring of the meteor shower of Eta Al-Delawiyat (Eta Aquarid) for this year as it will reach its climax on the evening of Tuesday 12 of Ramadan 1441 AH, corresponding to May 5, 2020 AD, and will extend until dawn on Wednesday, May 6, 2020.

The meteor shower will be best viewed in the southern hemisphere but will be visible in the northern hemisphere - just not as clearly. The radiant is the apparent point from which a shower appears to emerge from. Viewing was best for those in the Northern Hemisphere. But the meteors will be raining down most of the week, so you may have more luck catching a glimpse during the slightly darker mornings on either side of the peak.

From the northern hemisphere, the shooting stars often appear as "earth grazers" - long meteors that appear to skim the surface of the Earth near the horizon.

Meteor showers occur when the earth crosses the orbit of a comet and the debris left in its wake burns up in the atmosphere, about 80 to 90 kilometres above our heads.

Where is Aquarius in the sky tonight?

The constellation sits between the constellations Capricorn and Pisces.

To find the best spot to scour the night sky, Bruce McClure from EarthSky.org suggests finding the Aquarius Constellation, and pinpointing its Y-shaped "Water Jar", which is made up of four stars, including Eta Aquarii.

This Annual Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower peaked on Wednesday at 02.30 am on Wednesday whereas presence of Full Moon was an obstacle outshining bright streaks of lights of this meteor shower zipping across the South Eastern sky.

They're best viewed in Australia because they rise to about 50 degrees in the sky, which is the best angle to view them from.

It was named the Flower Moon by early Native American tribes.

Starting after 1am BST, Aquarius will creep over the eastern horizon. This creates the Orionid meteor shower, which peaks around October 20.

However, there is no need to locate the radiant because the Eta Aquariids will fly out in virtually every direction.

"You don't need to know where they are to watch a meteor shower". But this week, the Southern Hemisphere gets its turn to see even more meteors light up the sky.

Astronomers have noted that we could be seeing as many as 50 meteors pass through the sky per hour, and have cautioned that viewers shouldn't get discouraged if they don't see anything straight away, since it can take your eyes almost 20 minutes to adjust to the dark skies.
