People who had COVID-19 are protected against reinfection with the virus for at least six months, according to a study posted online Friday by researchers at Oxford University in England.
This specific cell, which can exist stably in the human body for up to eight months, remembers one of two components of the COVID-19 virus from the first infection, the spike and nucleocapsid proteins so that it will recognize the virus and trigger the regeneration of antibodies targeting COVID-19 virus when they encounter a second infection. He said all three were OK and did not develop code-19 symptoms.
Researchers tested 12,180 frontline health-care workers for coronavirus antibodies to see if they have been previously infected.
This suggests that most people are immune to Covid-19 for at least 6 months after infection.
Professor David Eyre of the University of Oxford's Nuffield Department of Population Health, said: "This is really good news, because we can be confident that, at least in the short term, most people who get Covid-19 won't get it again".
There have been 2 080 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the total infections to 769 759.
318 new Covid-19 cases, 21 in Donegal
As of midnight Friday 20th November, the HPSC has been notified of 344 confirmed cases of COVID-19. As of 2pm today 289 Covid-19 patients are hospitalised, of which 33 are in ICU.
On average, according to the text, during the last seven days, the southern province of Eastern Cape registered the highest number of new cases of Covid-19 per day, with an average of 1,385.
"We will follow this group of staff closely to see how long the protection lasts and whether the previous infection affects the severity of the infection if people become infected again", Ayre said. They evaluated them for 30 weeks and found that of the 11,052 study participants who did not have antibodies initially, 89 developed symptomatic COVID-19.
This study mirrors the recent results of research from Iceland.
"Our comprehensive staff testing programme is revealing a regular stream of valuable information as we try to better understand how to tackle this disease", added OUH Chief Executive Officer Dr Bruno Holthof.
With that total, plus 711,195 recoveries and 20,968 reported deaths, it is estimated there are now 37,596 active cases of Covid-19 in the country.
