Grosjean to remain in hospital overnight after Bahrain crash

Grosjean is believed to have suffered burns on his hands and ankles and a suspected broken rib, with all of the Frenchman's fingers bandaged up in the video he posted.

The vehicle burst into flames upon impact and the race was immediately red-flagged. The contact speared Grosjean into the ArmCo barrier with the front of his Haas penetrating the metal surface and ripping through it, with a tyre sent flying over it and into the in-field.

Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton won a crash-marred Bahrain Grand Prix where Romain Grosjean somehow escaped with only minor burns after his auto exploded into a fireball.

Safety Car driver Andrew van der Merwe, who was part of the team who dragged Grosjean from the fire, said: "I've never seen that much fire.in 12 years I've not seen that much fire and an impact like that".

Medical vehicle driver Alan van der Merwe, one of the first on the scene, said it had taken "a little while" to process the situation.

"I don't get why you wouldn't race", the Dutchman said. But it shows an incredible job Formula One has done, the FIA has done, over time to be able to walk away from something like that.

In the long delay that followed as Grosjean's vehicle was carried away and the safety barrier was repaired, Hamilton posted to Instagram his relief to see the Haas driver escape without major injury.

"It was a big surprise". It looked like dynamite. a massive explosion tore the vehicle apart. "Then Romain just started to actually get out of the vehicle itself, which is pretty wonderful after an accident like that". There was relief when we got back here. "Wow... the risk we take is no joke, for those of you out there that forget that we put our life on the line for this sport and for what we love to do", he wrote.

A F1 Twitter statement on Friday afternoon read: 'We are so thankful that Romain Grosjean was able to walk away from this.

There will be a sizeable time delay, of at least 45 minutes, while repairs are undertaken to the wrecked barrier.

"It is a miracle he is alive", said Britain's 1996 world champion Damon Hill, expressing his "absolute shock and horror" at the images on Sky television. Here's hoping Romain Grosjean recovers at the earliest, and makes it in time for the final two races of his F1 career.

There are two races remaining on the 2020 F1 calendar.
