Director-general of World Health Organisation Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is upset that Beijing has yet to provide the necessary access to team members investigating the origins of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Director-general of WHO Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he was "very disappointed" with the last-minute bar on entry, in a rare castigation of Beijing from the United Nations body.
"Critical" mission "We were all operating on the on the understanding that the team would begin deployment today", he said, adding that two members of the team coming from far away had set off early Tuesday, before it became clear that the necessary approvals had not been received.
China on Wednesday acknowledged that there could be some "misunderstanding" between Beijing and the World Health Organisation (WHO) over granting timely permission to experts to visit the country to probe the origin of the coronavirus, even as it gave no indication about when it will allow them to come.
According to Ghebreyesus, the visit was developed together with Beijing and the World Health Organization head signaled that this mission is the priority for the WHO. Scientists have long said it is essential to find out how the virus jumped species into humans.
It seems odd that these desperate last-minute contacts with Chinese officials would be necessary, since China agreed to the inspection long ago, after months of heated negotiations and huge worldwide pressure, and the W.H.O. mission to Wuhan was announced with a great deal of global media fanfare a month ago.

Roberts , who played a Bond girl in " A View to a Kill " alongside Roger Moore and also starred in " Charlie's Angels ", was 65. He continued: "Then about 90 seconds later her eyes rolled back in her head and she was out and I was just beside myself".
Authorities were doing their best to speed up preparations for the experts' visit, foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told a daily news briefing in Beijing. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has also slammed the Chinese Communist Party for continuing to spread disinformation regarding COVID-19, and obstructing the World Health Organization investigation. "But there's no need to read too much into it", she said. Ghebreyesus says that he is "disappointed" that Chinese officials haven't finalized permissions for the arrival of a team of experts into China to examine origins of COVID-19.
Australia's Prime Minister Scott Morrison had also called for an investigation to trace the origins of COVID-19 and how it transmitted to humans.
"Geopolitics... put the world in this situation", she told AFP in an interview.
Marion Koopmans, a Dutch virologist who heads the Erasmus Medical Centre's Department of Viroscience in Rotterdam and is part of the investigation team heading to China, said that they were "ready to go".
China has sought to divert attention from Wuhan and has played up reports that the coronavirus had been found in waste water in such countries as Spain and Italy before the Wuhan outbreak.
