Biden Administration Approves $230M Deal for At-Home COVID Test

The self-performed test, which won US emergency use authorization in December, can give results within 15 minutes or less.

The tests by Australian manufacturer Ellume were the first over the counter, rapid home test kits to be approved by U.S. regulators.

The Ellume deal provides an early look at how President Joe Biden plans to expand Covid-19 testing, which has always been a problem in the US.

"Ellume has been ramping up manufacturing and will ship 100,000 test kits per month to the United States from February through July", said Andy Slavitt, senior White House adviser for Covid-19 response.

Ellume says it would construct its first USA -based manufacturing facility to make the exams, ramping up towards producing 19 million kits every month later this yr.

The test is not in use in Australia.

When asked how a third vaccine's authorization could help speed up the government's goal of inoculating most Americans by the end of summer, Slavitt said the authorization of Johnson & Johnson's shot will not likely cause an immediate dramatic shift.

A new over-the-counter home Covid test that features 95% accuracy and a less invasive nasal swab will be available for consumers this month.

"I would not at this point be overly confident that those doses would come evenly", Slavitt added.
