Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: Sexually assaulted me in the past overseas

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

US lawmaker Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has revealed that she is a survivor of sexual assault, in an emotional video on Monday, in which she described fearing for her life during the storming of the Capitol on January 6.

Through teary eyes, Ocasio-Cortez went on to say that being told to "move on" from the insurrection at the Capitol reminded her of the tactics used by abusers.

At the urging of then-US president Donald Trump, thousands of the protesters streamed to the Capitol on January 6. "All of a sudden I hear my staffer G yell out 'Hey, it's OK, come out.' When I come out this man is a Capitol Police officer".

"I felt that if this was the journey that my life was taking, that, I felt that things were going to be OK and that, you know, I had fulfiled my goal", she said, wiping away tears from her eyes. "Things weren't adding up", she added, saying she felt like he was looking at her with "anger and hostility".

People familiar with her thinking told Politico Monday that the congresswoman is "seriously considering" running for the seat in 2022, but is now undecided. I have everything we need. We can live for like a month in this office. She ran over to the legislative office to her staffer, and he said, "Hide, hide, run and hide". "And we found her a pair of sneakers to wear from one of my staffers so that she could run if she needed to literally run for her life". Holding back the details for security reasons, she managed to express she "had a very close encounter where I thought I was going to die". But eventually she realized that the person banging on her office door had made it inside.

But Ocasio-Cortez's story was intimate for myriad other reasons, too. "I felt that if this was the journey that my life was taking, that, I felt that things were going to be OK, and that, you know, I had fulfilled my goal", Ocasio-Cortex explained as her voice broke and she wiped away tears.

Thousands protest for Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny as police crack down
The rallies began under snowfall around 0900 GMT (5pm Singapore time) amid a huge police presence, Reuters reporters said. Police have said the protests were illegal as they had not been authorized and would be broken up.

She equated Republican calls to move on from the incident, in which five people died and dozens of police were injured, to other forms of abuse.

With more than 150,000 people tuning in she shared the fear she felt as she hid in the bathroom and later in the office of California Democratic Rep. Katie Porter. "All of our experiences make us who we are and that's also to say that most people live with trauma.there is a community of so many people who can understand".

Attacking the congresswoman and claiming she's politicizing her experience by merely talking about it, Limbaugh turned to the phones. "As she gains more political experience her abilities will grow, her political expertise will grow", said Sapiro. "And those text messages came from other members of Congress". And it is not okay to downplay that, or for people to expect anyone to "move on" from what happened on January 6th. "The situation did not feel OK". Josh Hawley, R-Mo., remain a "present danger" for casting doubt on President Biden's election, complaints that were echoed by rioters. Of that man who touched you inappropriately at work, telling you to move on, are they going to believe you? "They've gone nearly a month and they haven't said that". "There were so may indications of this leading up to this moment".

And thanking those who listened to her story on Instagram Live, the congresswoman again addressed people asking members of Congress to "move on".

We can not move on without accountability.
