Google has had high hopes for its streaming Stadia platform since its 2019 release.
What does this mean for Stadia subscribers?
None of the video games that have been in improvement at Google's Stadia studios had been introduced, though some "near-term planned" video games should find yourself popping out. More than a year on, it is still hard to play Stadia games on a TV. EA and Stadia have announced that Federation Internationale de Football Association 21 will be available for streaming on March 17th.
NEW YORK (AP) - Google is closing the internal studio tasked with developing games for its Stadia cloud-gaming service, a move that raises questions about the future of the Stadia service itself. But with promises unfulfilled and a seemingly more lucrative option of licensing the tech to outside interests, it's entirely possible that Stadia will go away as well before long. It's no coincidence that more studios aren't capable of doing so.
Google's revolution in gaming is being cut short, as the company announced this week that it is getting out of the game-making business and will now offer its platform directly to game publishers, while the Stadia Pro package will still be offered to the public. The goal, Google said when it announced the service, was to reach well beyond the audience of traditional gamers and especially penetrate markets such as China and India, where many people can not easily afford or access a pricey PlayStation from Sony Corp. or Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox.
Moving forward, the company will focus on continuing to improve that technology.
Zuckerberg hasn’t convinced Australia to back down from new law
The newly proposed Australian law aims to make Google and Facebook pay Australian media firms for using their news content. Facebook has threatened to prevent Australians from sharing news on its platform if the law is implemented.
If that improves, the shutting of a development division many didn't even know existed beforehand will be largely irrelevant, no matter the outrage on Twitter.
A key pillar of Google's new strategy is offering up Stadia's game streaming technology to other interested companies. Now the business will focus on partnerships with third-party studios instead.
The service's best moments may have been when its third-party ports showed off the strength of the cloud gaming model, in which a game can run well on just about any device with a screen and a strong internet connection. Now, the path forward looks much clearer and, unfortunately, a bit stale.
As of now, it appears nothing about Stadia will change immediately.
Luna vies with Microsoft's xCloud and Google Stadia in the shift to playing video games directly in the cloud.
Phil Harrison had this to say on Google Stadia's transition: "In 2021, we're expanding our efforts to help game developers and publishers take advantage of our platform technology and deliver games directly to their players".
