Manchin Brushes Off Harris' Interview: 'There's No Apologies Needed'

As she continues to work through a busy transition into the office of Vice President, Kamala Harris took time to sit down for an exclusive interview with ABC15 this week, weighing in on the almost $2 trillion "American Rescue Plan", what's next for COVID-19's vaccine roll-out, and the administration's promise to unite the country.

West Virginia's Democratic Senator, Joe Manchin, appeared to denounce Vice President Kamala Harris on Sunday after she appeared on the state's local TV station, WSAZ, noting that the coronavirus relief plan is "a big issue" for the region and the country.

Monday's call - which the source said took place around noon and lasted for more than 20 minutes - covered a number of subjects, including the US and Canada working together on the economic recovery, climate change and the fight against COVID-19.

Harris has been reaching out to members of both parties on Capitol Hill, and has called mayors and governors to pitch the COVID-19 package. Harris spoke with us about the importance of addressing climate change, as well as the office's focus on our nation's economy and workers.

But Manchin, D-W.Va., said he was surprised by the Harris interview in his state, claiming no one from the administration had called him to discuss the appearance. Harris said, "To your point in West Virginia, one in seven families is describing their household as being hungry, one in six can't pay their rent, and one in four small businesses are closing permanently or have already closed, so it's a big issue in West Virginia and across the country", Harris said.

In the readout sent out by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) Monday, Trudeau thanked Harris for the support to free the two Michaels.

Twelve years ago, Biden and Obama entered office representing vastly different generations and different approaches to politics and policy.

Harris made the pledge in a conversation with Trudeau.

Psaki declined to say on Monday whether Harris' interview was designed specifically to apply pressure on Manchin. And he may be a more popular figure in some of those senators' states than Harris, who was seen as more progressive than Biden during the primary.

Indeed, the White House reached out to Manchin after word got back to them that he was displeased. With no margin for error at all in the Senate, the president is sending a not-so-subtle message to West Virginia's Joe Manchin and Arizona's Kyrsten Sinema that they better toe the line or suffer the consequences.

"Not only is he a key partner to the president and to the White House on this package, but on his agenda", Psaki continued. For weeks, Manchin has made it clear that people making $300,000 should not be getting stimulus checks, the overall price tag should be lower and that the deal should be bipartisan.
