Myanmar diaspora in Ottawa shocked and angered by military coup

The United States is the dominant shareholder in the International Monetary Fund, which has provided Myanmar with $700 million in emergency coronavirus financing over the past seven months, including last week's payment, which included $116.6 million through the IMF's Rapid Credit Facility and $233.4 million through the Rapid Financing Instrument.

The Group of Seven largest developed economies have collectively condemned the military coup in Myanmar adding it was deeply concerned about the fate of detained political leaders such as Aung San Suu Kyi. "The military is not the government".

"We are following the unfolding developments closely". A convoy of military vehicles can be seen Enroute the parliament moments before Aung San Suu Kyi was detained. "They do not trust her, they do not like her, and they do not want her to be part of the country's future".

"The only image that they have of Myanmar is genocide", said Kyi.

The majority moved to neighboring Thailand, where they continue to build the skyscrapers of Bangkok, work in its restaurants and navigate its fishing fleets to send remittances home.

The takeover presents a test for the worldwide community. But for those overseas, it also severed hopes of economic progress and democracy eventually settling in.

"I'm not suggesting that it's obvious or easy, but this is the approach that has to be tried - to see if there's any way to find some kind of coalition that leverages both carrots and sticks to make a difference", said Mitchell.

"I'm just so angry", he told CBC News in English. "They're so remote from the world, they don't know any other way but to be scared".

Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, was ruled by the military until 2011, when democratic reforms spearheaded by Suu Kyi brought an end to military rule.

The Australian government is facing fresh calls to suspend all military ties with Myanmar until democracy has been restored following a coup.

"We don't need the military".

"The United States is taking note of those who stand with the people of Burma in this hard hour".

"Free, free Aung San Suu Kyi, free, free Myanmar", the crowd chanted in unison while their representatives handed Foreign Ministry officials a statement that called on Japan to use all of its "political, diplomatic, and economic power" to restore the civilian government in Myanmar.

Now the president of the National Democratic Institute, Mitchell served as US ambassador to Myanmar from 2012 to 2016 - the first ambassador since the USA withdrew its envoy in 1990. The visit was feted as a reset for Myanmar and a symbol of progress and democratic change.

The military justified its seizure of power by alleging widespread fraud in elections held three months ago that the NLD won in a landslide.

Mass protests led by Buddhist monks in 2007 forced the generals to compromise and the NLD finally came to power in 2015 under a new constitution guaranteeing a major role for the military in government, including key ministries. Experts doubt the strength of the allegations.

"With the events of the last 48 hours, it is clear there can be no more military cooperation until the situation in Myanmar is resolved".

But the likelihood of Southeast Asian neighbors pressuring the military is thin, said Dulayapak Preecharush, a scholar of Southeast Asian studies at Thammasat University.

An incredible video appears to show a woman in Myanmar doing her regular aerobics class, unaware that a military coup is happening behind her. The COVID-19 disease is caused by the coronavirus.
