Ontario announces who's next in line for COVID-19 vaccines

Ontario reports 1868 new COVID-19 cases as stay-at-home order lifts in 27 public health units

Ontario's health minister says the province is not ready to release a more detailed COVID-19 vaccine rollout plan because of continued supply shortages.

Another 13 people have died from the virus across the province.

"Many, numerous experts that are advising the government are saying publicly that they think we're reopening too fast and that the proper measures are not in place to prevent the third wave", she said.

It has said that it wants to do the same in Ontario's three hardest hit regions on Monday, though officials in Peel have asked that the stay-at-home order remain in place for an additional 14 days.

According to the latest provincial numbers, Ontario has confirmed 309 cases of the B.1.1.7 variant first detected in the United Kingdom and nine cases of the B 1.351 variant first detected in South Africa.

"Without the ability to respond quickly and effectively, and without the ability to control spread in the community, we face the very real risk of a third wave, and potentially a third lockdown", he said.

Ontario's premier is defending the lifting of a stay-home order for the majority of the province's regions today despite warnings it could lead to a third wave.

Ontario administered a relatively modest 5,053 doses of vaccines on Family Day Monday, and so far the province has fully vaccinated 186,934 residents with the required two doses.

Newfoundland and Labrador now has 297 active cases of COVID-19. On Tuesday, officials reported 320 new cases in Toronto, 154 in Peel and 118 in York Region.

The stay-at-home order will stay in effect in Toronto, Peel and York Region until February 22, the regions will likely be place in the "Grey-Zone" of the province's colour-tiered framework.

Officials reported that 742 people are now in hospital due to COVID-19, but noted some hospitals have not submitted data on their bed use, which may have resulted in an underestimation.

"I wouldn't call it reopening, I'd call it transitioning", said Premier Doug Ford on Tuesday.

There have been 319 confirmed VOC cases out of a pandemic total of 287,736 cases of COVID-19. The number of cases for any city or region may differ slightly from what is reported by the province, because local units report figures at different times.
