Congressional Democrats, spurred on by the Biden administration, introduced a bill on Thursday that seeks to grant more than 11 million illegal immigrants an eight-year pathway to citizenship.
Democrats are unveiling Biden-backed legislation Thursday morning to overhaul the immigration system, which includes setting up a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.
"It is because time and time again, we have compromised too much and capitulated too quickly to fringe voices who have refused to accept the humanity and contributions of immigrants to our country and dismiss everything, no matter how significant it is in terms of the national security, as amnesty". He acknowledged the final product is likely to change significantly.
The bill aims to create a path to citizenship for 11 million undocumented immigrants who can prove they were in the United States on January 1, 2021. Applicants will have five years of temporary legal status, then they'll be allowed to apply for green cards. They would immediately become eligible for green cards and could apply for citizenship after three years.
The plan also would raise the current per-country caps for family and employment-based immigrant visas.
The last time comprehensive, bipartisan immigration legislation was brought up in U.S. Congress was in 2013, and comprehensive immigration reform hasn't passed in over 30 years in the country, according to a USA Today report. It also would provide resources for more judges, support staff and technology to address the backlog in processing asylum seekers.
Since coming to power, Biden has announced a push to reform immigration and roll back his predecessor's hardline policies, including with the creation of a special task force to reunite families separated by Trump's "zero tolerance" border policy towards undocumented immigrants. And it would set up refugee processing in Central America, to try to prevent some of the immigrant caravans that have overwhelmed border security in recent years.

Bob Menendez of New Jersey and Democratic Rep. Linda Sánchez of California, will not only give people who illegally crossed the border into the USA before January 1, 2021, the opportunity for a five-year temporary status and then three-year citizenship waiting period.
Sanchez, whose parents are immigrants, said she anticipates discussion with Republicans over border security.
Both former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush had attempted to put their stamp on immigration by unveiling proposals that included pathways to citizenship, but both plans were rejected by Congress.
Asked whether the White House would be open to considering potential Republican-led amendments to the bill that would increase any type of immigration enforcement, an administration official didn't rule it out.
During the CNN town hall Tuesday night, Biden said that while a pathway to citizenship would be essential in any immigration bill, 'there´s things I would deal by itself'.
Menendez, too, seemed to suggest he was open to a piece-by-piece approach. "By implementing a system for obtaining prior approval before pursuing certain cases, and through regular reporting of civil immigration enforcement actions, we will better coordinate our efforts, achieve consistency in our operations, and inform the development of the secretary's new enforcement guidelines".
