US admiral sounds alarm on China's military ambitions in Asia

"Each of these actions threaten the rules-based order that maintains global stability, " Blinken said of China's actions in Xinjiang, Hong Kong and Taiwan, and of cyber attacks on the United States and economic coercion against USA allies.

China has lodged solemn representations to both USA and Japan over comments on China in a recent joint declaration, said the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian, adding that China strongly opposes such severe violation of its internal affairs. "There is only one system in the world, and that is the worldwide system with the United Nations at its core, and there is only one set of rules, and that is the basic norms of global relations based on the UN Charter", said Zhao on Wednesday.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan are scheduled to meet Thursday through Friday in Anchorage, Alaska, with top Chinese diplomat Yang Jiechi and State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, both Beijing and Washington have announced. A senior official, who briefed reporters on condition of anonymity, said the two sides would not deliver a joint statement and no major announcements were expected.

Last June, Beijing imposed a sweeping national security law on the city and Hong Kong authorities have arrested most of the prominent pro-democracy supporters and outspoken critics.

Chinese officials targeted by the latest sanctions from the USA include Wang Chen, part of China's elite 25-person Politburo and those responsible for developing and implementing a sweeping national security law in Hong Kong that criminalises anything authorities deem as terrorism, secession, subversion and foreign collusion. Now, they also face financial sanctions as specified under the US Hong Kong Autonomy Act - for instance, restrictions on banking. The Foreign Ministry in Beijing last week said the U.S.
