Sheriff: At least 3 dead following tornado in Ohatchee

Strong tornado kills at least five after ripping through Alabama

Three members of one family were killed while sheltering in "a wooden structure" in the town of Ohatchee and another died in mobile home there, Calhoun County coroner Pat Brown told AFP.

'Tragically, we are receiving reports of loss of life. PLEASE TAKE COVER if you are in the path of this storm!'

A total of seven tornadoes have been reported in Alabama so far, the NWS said. Unfortunately, the day is not over yet. "The most persistent/intense supercells will be capable of producing strong to violent tornadoes, along with very large hail and substantial damaging winds".

The weather service cautioned those in the path of the storm that, "if a tornado warning is issued for your area, move to a place of safety, ideally in a basement or interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building".

Stephen Quinn, a reporter with local television station ABC33/40, said on Twitter that "multiple people pulled from their homes in Eagle Point subdivision and hospitalized". At this point in time, the risk for severe weather does not look as significant this weekend, but the northwestern part of the area is included in a risk for scattered severe storms.

Spann's colleague, ABC 33/40 meteorologist Taylor Sarallo, then took over the broadcast when Alabama's preeminent meteorologist heard the grim news.

According to the weather service, Centreville and Brent also remain in the path of this risky storm.
