Shanghai mRNA COVID-19 vaccine begins phase 1 clinical trials

Over half of United Kingdom adults have received at least one dose of vaccine now, with the government promising that all United Kingdom adults will receive a jab by the end of July.

The researchers analysed blood samples from 237 people and found that the antibody and T-cell responses in those who had not previously had COVID-19 resembled those generated by natural infection.

"This has been a long year, and I know people are exhausted and they don't want to hear that it's going to take us a little while longer, but it's going to take us a little while longer", she said.

Most studies just look at people's antibody response, but this research also measured participants' T-cells.

Among individuals who had not had the virus in the past and had received one dose of the jab, antibody and T cell responses were at a similar or higher level compared to those who had previously been infected but not been vaccinated.

But this effect was less in people with infection-acquired immunity plus a single dose of the vaccine.

Ontario allocating $3.2B in new COVID relief to hospitals
The numbers used in this story are found in the Ontario Ministry of Health's COVID-19 Daily Epidemiologic Summary . An additional three people's deaths were blamed on COVID-19 and the pandemic has so far claimed 7,244 lives.

These findings "inevitably" lead to debate about "whether vaccine supplies could be stretched further by offering only a single dose to those known to have been previously infected", said Prof Danny Altmann at Imperial College, London.

In other words, even if you've had Covid, the vaccine will make you more likely to maintain protection against new mutations of the virus. They'll also provide the names of close contacts.

A United Kingdom study has recently shown that a single dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine offers an immune response similar to that generated by infection and could also give protection from variants to people who have previously had the virus, a British study said on Friday.

Dr de Silva added: "I have lots of individuals, healthcare workers, writing and asking - they'd had Covid before, 'do they really need a vaccine?' and my answer is, actually with vaccination, you can get higher antibody responses than now you have from your infection nine months ago".

The study, funded by the Department of Health and Social Care, was an extension of Public Health England's Siren study of healthcare workers.

The government directed everyone above 45 years to take the first jab of the COVID vaccine without hesitation.
