Vaccine certification might only be implemented once all adults vaccinated: UK PM

Data showed a recent steep fall in infections were starting to level off

Critics have hit out at the idea of COVID vaccine passports, saying they are "simply unworkable" and could create a "two-tier Britain".

Mr Johnson said an update on the idea would come next month.

"And my impression is that there is a huge wisdom in the public's feeling about this and people instinctively recognise when something is unsafe and they can see that Covid is collectively a threat, and they want us as their government and me as the prime minister to take all the actions I can to protect them".

The Prime Minister echoed the thoughts of the nation as he admitted a trip to the hairdressers was overdue - with salons and barbers forced to close during England's current coronavirus lockdown.

"What I don't think we will have in this country is, as it were, vaccination passports to allow you to go to the pub, or something like that", he said in February.

"There is going to be a role for certification", he told reporters on Thursday.

Baker questioned what will happen to pregnant women, who are now not advised to get vaccinated.

Walz to expand vaccine eligibility to Minnesotans over 16
While this announcement is exciting and welcome, for folks keeping up with vaccine updates the news isn't necessarily a surprise. Ontario reported another 2,380 cases and 17 deaths, but officials noted that number was inflated because of a data catchup.

But Tooby, who stressed that he is "pro the vaccine" himself, added that any vaccine passporting for pubs could also be a problem on civil liberties grounds.

But trade bodies have said making access conditional on jabs is "simply unworkable" and would cause "conflict" between staff and punters.

"As things stand, I can see absolutely nothing in the data to dissuade me from continuing along our roadmap to freedom, unlocking our economy and getting back to the life we love", Mr Johnson said in a speech to the Conservative spring conference.

Jonathan Neame, the chief executive of the Shepherd Neame pub chain who own over 300 pubs around the United Kingdom, said they would not be insisting on the measure.

Tory MP Steve Baker said it was a "ghastly trap" and unfairly penalised those advised not to have a vaccine.

The British Beer and Pub Association said the requirement would not be "appropriate or necessary".

"It is simply unworkable, would cause conflict between staff and customers and nearly certainty result in breaches of equality rules", she said.
